Are you an experienced software developer seeking a new challenge? This could be the role for you.  Joining us as a Senior Software Developer in this unique role supporting scientists in our world-class labs by creating in-house software applications to track experiments and perform analysis. You will:  collaborate with other members of Cellular Informatics and various teams across campus gather requirements from our laboratories build a deep understanding of Python, Perl and JavaScript and develop upon existing applications employ testing best practices in all areas of your code understand and adapt the underlying database models and the connections between our in-house systems.  The Opportunity: You will be working on a new project which involves storage, tracking and analysis of large data sets. This project acts as a microservice, integrating with many systems across the Wellcome Sanger Institute. A major aspect of this task will be data format standardization, API calls and secure, robust storage.  More about what you'll be doing: As a Senior Software Developer you will gather requirements directly from the laboratory groups. You will be assisted in developing an understanding of the biology involved.  Analysing the data provided and collaboratively developing a solution will be a crucial part of the job. You will offer expert guidance to our scientists on best practice in software development.  Our systems are developed upon an internal cloud solution - Openstack. You will learn how to manage the virtual machines, web servers and other tools necessary to host an application on the cloud. Deploy best practice programming and testing techniques using appropriate tools and languages. At the same time, you will work as part of the Cellular Informatics team, which includes a Data Science Apprentice (Bioinformatics) and experienced developers and bioinformatics scientists.  Grow a knowledge of Python, Perl and JavaScript programming languages. Each of which are applied in various contexts across our systems. Furthermore, JavaScript frameworks Vuejs, D3 and jQuery have been used when necessary within our systems. An essential part of the role is to develop an understanding of each of the systems' architecture, database schema and tools. However, no previous experience in the aforementioned languages is required. Desire to learn and adapt in our fast-changing scientific environment is critical.  About the team: As a group of software developers, we work in a team-oriented manner taking the best from current computing practices. We maintain frequent conversations with users, building relationships and confidence. We aren't afraid of rapid change in our tools to keep up with the evolution of the research that drives the development of our software.  Essential Skills: Bachelors degree or above in computer related sciences or equivalent experience Evidence of a high level of competence in a modern scripting language based on C-style syntax using a relational database Evidence of ability to design and run complex database queries in SQL Experience of and the ability to deliver a quality product within fixed deadlines Evidence of having successfully worked in a collaborative, project-focused software team Evidence of ability to prioritise tasks to ensure the right things can be done at the right time Highly developed problem solving skills If no Perl experience, willingness to learn and excel in a current programming language (e.g. Python or Perl) Experience with RESTful services Ideal Skills: Programming in Modern Perl Programming in Python / Django Some experience with JavaScript frameworks and web development Experience and understanding of bioinformatics and familiarity with genome data Evidence of having successfully created interfaces that link with and enables extraction/reporting/display of data from large, complex databases into a web environment Other information: Whilst the developments around COVID-19 continue to evolve, the Wellcome Genome Campus is closed for all but essential functions and facilities.  People remain at the centre of everything that we do and the majority of our staff are now working remotely to ensure continuity of operations, making use of remote communication and collaboration tools. Interviews will be taking place virtually and the successful candidate should expect to be fully supported through remote on-boarding and working from home until the Campus re-opens to all staff. This approach may vary for individuals located overseas and/or where a visa is required and starting will be based on a number of factors, we will be able to provide specialist advice to those affected candidates.
