The Opportunity: We are looking for a Senior Bioinformatician to join our Tree of Life and Parasites and Microbes teams.  About Us: Over the next five years, our team will be carrying out a wide variety of large scale sequencing projects ranging from targeted amplicon sequencing of hundreds of thousands of insects to long read population genomic sequencing of hundreds of insects. Our projects range from using genomic surveillance to study malaria transmission and biodiversity changes to using population genomics to study speciation.  About the Role: You will contribute to these projects by devising and implementing software solutions and statistical analyses. You will be responsible for performing computational research related to evolutionary genomics, with a focus on population genomics, pangenomics, targeted amplicon sequencing, and reference genome building. You will implement pipelines to transform raw data collected from large-scale experiments into analysis-ready data and interpretable statistics, while working closely with the team to set and ensure high standards of data organization and visualisation, statistical analysis, reproducible research, and use of code repositories. Creativity and innovation are essential for this role as these are rapidly developing analytical areas and multiple approaches to analyse large datasets are available. About You: You must be able to effectively communicate with wet-lab scientists and this role would suit somebody with significant previous bioinformatics experience and a deep understanding of next-generation sequencing data analysis. You will join a supportive multidisciplinary team with the opportunity to work in conjunction with computational biologists, PhD students, and postdocs. You will have the opportunity to support and train junior members of the team.  Essential Skills: PhD in statistics, bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, population genetics, or other relevant area of quantitative analysis - or - equivalent experience - with focus on computing Excellent programming skills in Python for scripting, data analysis, pipeline and tool development. Good data visualization skills, advanced knowledge of matplotlib, ggplot or similar Proficiency in Unix/Linux operating systems Experience with using compute cluster and batch queuing systems Experience with software version control systems Experience with managing and processing next-generation sequencing data Experience with pipelining/workflow engines and languages, preferably Snakemake or Nextflow Excellent communication skills Experience of working collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders Ability to work together with wet lab biologists providing analysis to inform experimental design and methods as well as data analysis of final results. Problem-solving skills and the ability to rapidly learn new skills Ideal Skills: Grounding in evolutionary genomics, genome biology and population genetics Experience in RNA sequencing and single cell RNAseq data analysis An interest in speciation, biodiversity, and/or global health Previous experience in creating finished software Previous experience with implementing data analysis pipelines on a cluster Experience working with relational databases and SQL Proficient in writing research manuscripts and reports Other information: Whilst the developments around COVID-19 continue to evolve, the Wellcome Genome Campus is closed for all but essential functions and facilities.  People remain at the centre of everything that we do and the majority of our staff are now working remotely to ensure continuity of operations, making use of remote communication and collaboration tools.
