We currently have vacancies for Principal Software Engineers, Senior Software Engineers and Software Engineers at our sites in New Malden, Frimley, Portsmouth and Dorchester.

As a Software Engineer, you will design, develop and support Naval Command Systems that provide the nerve centre for ships. You will combine information from the equipment on the ship (like Radar, Sonar etc.) to form a picture of what is going on around the vessel, helping the crew make decisions and take action if required.

You will be involved in creating a Windows-based Naval Combat Management System on a networked virtualised shared infrastructure or black-box PC based system architecture. You will be working on representative combat system equipment for a variety of RN ships including the new Type 26 frigate, the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carrier, the Type 45 Destroyer and other in-service ships.

You could be developing the Systems that end up deployed in the Royal Navy's fleet of Ships and Submarines, which will be used to support the crew, as they police the world's oceans, whether delivering humanitarian aid or in combat.

In addition, this role will provide you with the opportunity to further develop your skills within a supportive team environment. It could also lead to further opportunities progressing within the team or the wider BAE Systems Business.

Your main responsibilities as a Software Engineer will involve:

Designing software to ensure that the overall system will behave according to its requirements.

Writing software according to coding standards and maintain existing software by investigating issues and identifying solutions.

Writing software test schedules and using them to test the system.

Documenting appropriate information, so that others can understand the software and the system.

Contributing to process improvement within the team to ensure that the team always looks to improve how it works.

Liaising with other team members, teams and customers to ensure key information is understood.

Your skills & qualifications

Developing your understanding and skills will be key in this role and relevant training will be provided.

However, your understanding of one or more of the following is essential:

Working knowledge of software design

Awareness and understanding of coding standards

Programming: Ada, C++, C# and .net framework

Scripting: VB Script and PowerShell

Understanding the principles of Software Integration and testing

Knowledge and use of Configuration Management tools

Windows Active Directory and Domain knowledge

Virtualisation technology toolsets - e.g VMWare

Networking

Knowledge of Naval Combat Systems and/or Large Software Systems

Qualified to degree level in a relevant subject or equivalent working experience

What we're looking for in you:

You will have a positive attitude and good communication skills to foster a productive and collaborative team dynamic both with your peers and managers.

Location: New Malden, Dorchester, Portsmouth - Broadoak or Frimley.

Salary: Up to £57,500 dependent on skills and experience

Benefits: Our employees receive an excellent benefits package which includes a competitive pension scheme, enhanced annual leave allowance and a Company contributed Share Incentive Plan. We also offer a range of additional benefits such as flexible working, an employee assistance programme, Cycle2work and many local and national employee discounts. Some employees may also be eligible for an annual incentive.
