We have a fantastic Policy Architect in technology opportunity on a full time basis.

As an independent regulator serving the public, the Information Commissioner upholds information rights for all. The ICO is at the forefront of policy, guidance, direct advice to the public, and enforcement of the UK's data protection and freedom of information laws; shaping how emerging technologies and information practices impact the lives of the UK public.

About the Team

The Technology Department is the ICO's centre of technical expertise and specialises in new and emerging technologies and their impact on information rights. The team exists as a point of reference for expert advice on a wide range of technology matters relevant to information rights. We develop technology-focussed advice and guidance for both UK organisations and citizens. Working with colleagues from across the ICO, the department plays a vital role in the development of a technical underpinning to the ICO's regulatory activities.

About the role

The Policy Architect (Technology) will work with leadership across the directorate and wider ICO, focusing on developing and influencing future technology policy, providing insight and direction, and analysing and assessing the impact of technology development on information rights.

About You

You will be fully conversant with all relevant legislation (with specific reference to the Data Protection Act 2018, the GDPR, PECR and the NIS Directive). Have a good understanding of the interplay between different information rights law, as well as connected legislation (for example, the eCommerce Directive) and other regulatory regimes, such as competition, content regulation and online harms.

You will develop forward-looking policy initiatives, making a tangible contribution to shaping the information rights agenda and ensure the ICO engages with key technology decision makers, designers and influencers in the UK and internationally.

You will have deep understanding of the intersection between Information Rights and new and emerging technologies. In particular you will have experience of identifying systemic technology practices that fail to deliver good information rights outcomes, and shaping and delivering interventions and solutions to these meet these challenges.
