Network Engineer
£31,174 to £43,000 (depending on experience)
London / North Home Counties
MI6 is the UK's foreign human intelligence agency. Every day, we gather secret intelligence from all over the world that helps us protect the UK. Our work requires sophisticated technology and innovative techniques, which is why we need your help. As a Network Engineer, you'll give us a crucial edge in a rapidly changing, data-driven world. Whether creating new products or integrating existing solutions, you'll face extraordinary challenges that you've never seen before.
The role
Ultimately, your role is to make sure MI6 gets the technology it needs. As a Network Engineer you'll design and maintain network, server or application infrastructure across our global platform. That could mean tackling large-scale enterprise deployments over several months, or fulfilling niche requirements, working directly with the customer. It all adds up to a varied role where you'll give advice, mentor colleagues and work with partners in industry or other government departments. There's even the possibility of working overseas: although this role is UK-based, your skills may sometimes be needed abroad.
About you
We're looking for broad experience across a number of areas: LAN, WAN and security hardware; Site to Site VPNs; multi-tenant infrastructure; and network routing/services protocols. An understanding of agile methodologies and network automation tools would be helpful too. Whatever your knowledge base, you'll be excited about technology, new capabilities and the opportunities they present. But what's really important is your ability to communicate and desire to learn. Here, you can deepen your skills through everything from classroom and online learning to development schemes. With a sense of responsibility for the country's security, you'll be proud to use your skills to help safeguard the nation.
All our roles come with a full range of benefits including a cycle to work scheme, interest-free season ticket loan and access to a subsidised gym. However, the true rewards lie in using your talents for the greater good. Find out more and apply via our website.
MI6 is an Equal Opportunities employer, committed to reflecting the society we protect. Our recruitment process is fair, transparent and based on merit. We particularly welcome applications from diverse and under-represented groups.
To be eligible to apply, you must be a British Citizen. One of your parents must be a British Citizen or must have one of the nationalities or citizenships from one of the following: British Overseas territory, British subject, British National (Overseas), British protected person, citizenship of the Commonwealth, EEA nationality, or citizenship of the United States of America. If deceased, have had such citizenship or nationality before death. If you hold dual nationality, of which one component is British, you will nonetheless be considered. If successful, you will not normally be required to give up your non-British citizenship but, as a condition of your employment or secondment, MI5 may impose restrictions on your postings, work travel and/or general use of that nationality. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. Each case will be carefully considered on its own facts. You can apply at the age of 17 years and 6 months, if successful you will not be offered a start date prior to your 18th birthday. Discretion is vital. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or a close family member. Please note, you should only launch your application from within the UK. If you are based overseas, you should wait until you visit the UK to launch an application. Applying from outside of the UK will impact on our ability to progress your application. Further information on our eligibility criteria can be found on the Applying section.
