Principal Policy Advisor (Technology) Fixed-term appointment, expected to last for 12 months Salary £48,096 pa, plus civil service pension and excellent benefits About us We have vacancies for a number of technology advisory positions - roles that will help us shape how emerging technologies and information practices impact the lives of the UK public. The ICO is at the forefront of policy, guidance, direct advice to the public, and enforcement of the UK's data protection and freedom of information laws; shaping how emerging technologies and information practices impact the lives of the UK public. These roles operate in a high profile, fast paced environment and you have the opportunity to impact on issues across many aspects of society. About the role You will provide insight and advice regarding emerging information rights issues with a technical dimension. You will be passionate in separating the hype from the reality, and focused on helping shape future technological developments to better respect and uphold the rights of citizens. At the heart of job we do is a curiosity and desire to shape the world in ways that empower the citizen and society, recognising that engineering a better outcome in such a data driven world for citizens will require specialists willing to approach issues related to personal data, technology and the impact on society in novel ways. You will be based at our Wilmslow head office, however the ICO embraces a flexible working policy which will include opportunities for homeworking where suitable. About you You will have significant relevant experience, which could have been gained from a policy, operational or corporate environment (at least 5 years' relevant experience will be an advantage), as well as an excellent understanding of the technology sector and internet economy, including associated data protection and internet safety issues. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to negotiate and maintain good relationships with senior stakeholders in all areas of public life and make sound judgements is essential. You don't have to come from a technical background, but if you have an interest in the role emerging technology plays in how our privacy and human rights are protected, and if you have expertise in areas such as data science, machine learning, privacy focused data sharing, privacy engineering, surveillance technologies, human centric design, behavioural analysis and social engineering, cyber security, ethics and technology law, then we would love to hear from you.
