Your work in automated language assessment will make a real difference to learners of English worldwide English Language iTutoring (ELiT) build ground-breaking English Language Learning applications and automated language assessment technology. We work at the interface of EdTech software engineering and world-leading Natural Language Processing research from Cambridge University. Harnessing Machine Learning, our &Improve learning applications are used by hundreds of thousands of English learners and teachers worldwide, while our auto-marker technology delivers exam results to candidates without delay. We're looking for a Software Engineering Manager to manage a growing team of software engineers (currently 8 strong) in our Bristol office. Your role Reporting to ELiT's Technical Director, you will have a diverse set of responsibilities that together will help define and successfully deliver the development roadmap. You will play a vital role in planning, recruitment, and management of a team with a wide variety of development and operational tasks, working closely with stakeholders who have an ambitious and innovative digital agenda. Who we are We operate as part of Cambridge Assessment English, who provide exams and tests of English, helping people worldwide to learn English and prove their skills to the world. We apply Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning technology to both Cambridge English products and our own Write & Improve and Speak & Improve products (with more products on the way). We take a mature and progressive approach to software engineering and working with technology in general. We embrace principles and processes that help us deliver quality software, including automated testing, continuous integration and delivery, and automated deployment. Nurturing growth You will be invested in supporting your team's personal development, acting as both mentor and coach, providing input, feedback and guidance, and taking practical corrective action where necessary. Supporting the team to unblock issues and identify and manage problems, you'll ensure the necessary resources and tools, processes and personnel are in place for the team to work effectively, and that the platform is supported, while guaranteeing incidents are appropriately managed. Sharing and promoting our values of creativity, innovation and collaboration, you'll work with the leadership team to define a set of metrics and KPIs to provide focus and a collective vision of success. You will apply your considerable communication skills both inside ELiT and in your dealings with the wider organisation to uphold effective, solutions-oriented relations. Finally, you will develop and implement a recruitment plan to increase ELiT's software development capacity to meet the needs of the business. Your qualifications, experience and qualities A BSc in Computer Science or a related field, or significant experience of software engineering.  Knowledge and appreciation of Machine Learning would be a great advantage but is not essential.   We are interested in receiving applications from candidates who have the following skills and experience Strong people-management skills and the ability to motivate and develop teams at all levels Ability to plan workloads in both the short and long term in order to ensure delivery of product milestones Excellent communication skills Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders Excellent organisational skills Excellent influencing skills Proven experience of managing and leading a software engineering team in an agile environment, and exposure to a variety of software development methodologies (e.g. XP, Kanban, Waterfall) Experience working in a small company/start-up environment Demonstrable experience of planning and managing software roadmaps Experience working with internal and external stakeholders Desirable Demonstrable experience working with DevOps teams Experience managing a technical support function
