About Research IT
The research community at the University of Manchester carries out world-leading research in many areas, including advanced materials, industrial biotechnology and cancer treatments. Research IT (RIT) is a fast-growing, can-do group within IT Services (ITS) at the University which delivers specialist, e-research capabilities which are critical to the success of that research.
Highly Restricted Data Service (HRDS)
We are in the early stages of developing a new service to support researchers working with highly restricted data (e.g., patient data). We are looking for a dynamic and proactive person who will have the opportunity to shape developments and then lead all aspects of the HRDS.
About This Role
You will:
Lead the HRDS team and be responsible for: ensuring that all processes and procedures required to maintain the integrity of the service are followed; the support of the infrastructure, installed software applications and users of the service; line management of staff focused on the HRDS; its development in accord with ITS strategy; and ensuring the research community is apprised of the service and is able to make effective use of it.
Liaise with key stakeholders at the University including Information Governance and Research Governance and develop a financial sustainability plan for the service. Lead a user-centred design approach to the service with close relationships with the research user community across all faculties.
Be part of the Research Infrastructure Team, which designs and delivers specialist IT infrastructure and services, and works closely with the University research community. (Services currently include: high-performance and high-throughput computing; resilient and high-performance storage. Provision is via both on-site hardware and use of off-site, commercial cloud resources including AWS and Azure).
You will have " Essential:
Relevant work experience.
A degree or professional qualification or substantial experience in a similar role.
An understanding of the storage and computational infrastructure and capability of at least one major cloud provider.
An understanding on the requirements of ISO27001 and related standards, including Cyber Essentials Plus and GDPR and delivering services that meet such requirements.
The ability to work as an effective part of a team and to establish productive relationships with people from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of skills.
The capacity to: take the initiative, be proactive, and anticipate both problems and opportunities, and take appropriate action as required; and ensure that full account is taken of users' real and stated needs in delivery of RIT services.
Experience in stakeholder management and engagement in providing services - both internally and externally.
Good communication and presentation skills.
You will have " Desirable:
A higher, preferably research, degree.
Experience working within an academic research environment.
A good understanding of the technologies used to deliver computational, storage, VM, container and Cloud-based platforms, in particular the Linux operating system and its large-scale installation, administration and support.
Have demonstrable knowledge and experience of creating information security policies, principles and processes.
Have experience and knowledge of Cloud security products and technologies.
Experience in designing and building security architecture at an enterprise level.
Strategic understanding of the importance of facilitating the use of highly restricted data in research to the University of Manchester.
Line management experience of technical staff.
An understanding of the research data lifecycle and the use of data in research.
