An exciting opportunity for a Systems Engineer to help us grow the new Type 31 frigate weapon systems integration and pioneer future business development opportunities, within the Defence Systems Technology (DST) business unit of Babcock International Group.

We are looking for a brave and collaborative Systems Engineer to meet this fast moving and challenging programme and help make the world a safer place through supporting the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Navy on these future generation platforms.

This role will be shared between the Combined Weapons Electrical Workshop (CWEW), Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth and the Babcock Technology Centre (BTC), Bristol as well as other locations to support the project, including the build site at Roysth and the potential for international travel. DST is a rapidly expanding area of Babcock International and works across a range of exciting design, manufacture and support projects. Our 1,500 strong team operate from a number of sites across the UK and internationally ensuring our global customer portfolio is always supported.

Main purpose of role

In this role you will support the Technical Manager and Type 31 Team to undertake complex integration of Weapon Systems alongside the Project and OEM teams onto the advanced platforms whilst meeting the required standards. You will also help develop current and future business opportunities in this area. The key activities will be as follows:

Provide technical input to the development of the Statement of Work, Technical Equipment Specification and associated documents for the procurement activities associated with the Weapons Systems.

Develop and control technical documentation to ensure safe and effective integration of medium and small calibre gun systems in support of the wider Type 31 Team.

Engage with multidisciplinary subject matter experts and non-technical stakeholders, such as commercial, project and programme management and the Combat System Integration Team, to support development to meet safety, quality, time, and cost requirements.

Support system trials and integration to achieve the required vessel acceptance programme.

Where required, the post holder shall provide mentorship of junior members of the team including apprentices, undergraduates and graduates on development placements.

The candidate should have excellent communication and presentation skills which will be essential for representing DST to both internal and external customers. Stakeholder management is essential in this role to ensure all groups are working towards common goals in a timely manner.

Key Skills and Knowledge

Knowledge of relevant standards for engineering design, qualification and acceptance.

Knowledge of Defence Standards and other MoD documentation is desirable.

Knowledge of weapon or combat system integration and the engineering issues that arise.

Knowledge of the impacts of Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (WOME) on the platform design and integration activities is desired.

Comprehensive working knowledge of the Microsoft suite of tools including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Project.

Experience

Experience of working with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.

Experience of RN operations or support activities is desirable.

Knowledge / Understanding of Engineering design processes, procedures and tools.

Experience of creating, collating and managing a complex suite of documentation.

Qualifications

HND or HNC in Engineering Discipline with significant demonstrable experience and capability.

Full UK driving licence.

Security/Joining Requirements

UK passport and British National.

The Successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements and may be required to complete a medical assessment.

The role will be in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require enhanced security and regular screening checks.
