RAL Space was recently awarded £99m from the UK Government to develop the National Satellite Test Facility (NSTF), which is now under construction. This state-of-the-art facility will provide a world class set of co-located facilities for the assembly, integration and testing of space payloads and satellites. Once completed, the NSTF will have the capability to conduct Vibration, Acoustic, Thermal, Pyroshock, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and antennae testing for payloads up to 7 tonnes within clean room conditions.

We now have a fantastic new opportunity for a Test Engineer to join our Thermal Vacuum Testing Group. You will be joining us from the early stages of the NSTF development which gives the exciting opportunity to be involved in the definition of the new facilities as well as upgrades to our existing facilities. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

Preparing for and conducting the Thermal Vacuum tests by:

Supporting the creation and maintaining the technical performance envelope of the equipment.

Assembling test setups, both mechanical and electronic.

Pump down, monitor, and be responsible for the operation of thermal cycling and thermal vacuum chambers. Including the working with liquid nitrogen.

Maintaining test logbooks.

Supporting the creation of and implementing maintenance plans.

Supporting the creation of and maintaining calibration plans.

Taking responsibility for the safe operation of the equipment by:

Following Health and Safety standards, STFC codes & policies.

Support the creation and maintenance of risk assessments for facilities as well as specific test campaigns

The Test Engineer will also support the creation and maintenance of the operational procedures relevant to the equipment, support the Principle Test Engineer at bid stage and may also have line management responsibility for junior test engineer.

About You

A full job description and details of the criteria can be found on our website, but if you have previous experience as a Test Engineer with the ability to work with test hardware, tools and workshop equipment as well as a real commitment to safe working then we would really like to hear from you.

With the majority of the facilities to be expected to operate to ECSS-Q-ST-20-07C experience of working under defined quality assurance practices is desirable and if you already have knowledge and experience of thermal vacuum or cycling chambers, thermal data acquisition setup and/or experience working in cleanrooms then do get in touch!
