It is an exciting time to join the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO). As the Research & Innovation team continue to bring world leading products and services to market, we have a number of opportunities for GIS Developers to support their activity. In these roles you will be supported to take ownership and to develop creative and innovative solutions, whilst mastering your technical coding skills.

About the UKHO

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We survey and chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

The role

As a GIS Developer you will have an aptitude for software development, architecture, geospatial databases and  data manipulation and transformation and will use your analytical skills to make sense of initiatives to build Proof of Concept demonstrators to test with customers. You will be required to successfully explore a problem and offer proactive solutions, using your strong investigative and fact-finding skills. Advising senior stakeholders and colleagues on technical concepts, you will be able to build positive working relationships, as well as present in a concise manner.

These roles are a great opportunity to further develop your coding skills in JavaScript, Python and SQL.

What we are looking for

To be successful in your application you will need:

Programming experience such as JavaScript, Python, Scala, Spark, Java, SQL.

Technical experience of software development environments, version control using Git, APIs (creation & exploitation) and SDKs.

Experience of report writing and presenting information in a clear and concise manner.

Broad understanding of and interest in computing, geospatial information and associated technology trends.
