The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has a worldwide network of embassies and consulates, employing over 14,000 people in nearly 270 diplomatic offices. We work with international organisations to promote UK interests and global security, including the EU, NATO, the United Nations, the UN Security Council and the Commonwealth.

This exciting specialist role in the Asia Pacific Research Group (APRG) has a great strategic importance for the UK, as you will be providing timely analysis to inform policy, while also working as a bridge between policy-makers and experts outside government.

Focusing specifically on China, you will draw on your analytical skills and expertise in domestic politics in the region to deepen our level of understanding. The majority of your time will be spent on political analysis, but we will also expect you to consolidate the relationship between the FCO and external experts - particularly academics, think-tanks and expert commentators. As you develop your own specialist expertise, you will help to maintain and enhance APRG's archive of material and help to build the capacity of others to be flexible, world-class diplomats as part of our Diplomacy 20:20 programme.

You may well have a relevant post-graduate degree and have worked on or in China in a multilateral organisation, NGO, academic institution or private business. We are, however, also interested in talking to people with a relevant undergraduate degree along with substantial experience working in or on China.

It's obviously critical that you're a confident communicator, who can conduct high-quality research, think strategically and master large amounts of information quickly and to tight deadlines. You will also be expected to undertake familiarisation visits to the region and support government-led exchanges with allies.

You must be a British citizen at the time of application and will be subject to Developed Vetting to a high level of security clearance.

Closing date: 9 March 2020.
