We are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and motivated individual - who proactively engages with new and emerging technologies - to undertake this position as our lead on supporting students and graduates starting their own business in the area of AR/VR.

This role provides a unique opportunity to focus on guiding students/graduates through the use of technology as an early-stage business idea/start-up, and helping them turn their passion for AR/VR into scalable business ventures.

Department

You will join our newly-formed Essex Startups Team, working closely with the Head of Start-Up Support and our Enterprise Officer, providing additional support, mentoring and guidance that augments our ever-increasing provision of student entrepreneurship opportunities and business support.

Based out of the University's brand new Innovation Centre, located on our Colchester Campus - which opened in July 2019, you'll oversee access, use, development, and provision of equipment including our High-Performance Computers, VR Headsets, and 360-degree lens, along with state-of-the-art equipment students/graduates can access.

You will work closely with our Deputy Director - Enterprise, Student Development Team, Computer Science and Electronic Engineering Department, and more, to grow awareness - and use - of the equipment located in StudioX.

Duties of the Role

The role is to act as a facilitator of new and emerging technology engagement and we're looking for a person who can lead students, graduates, staff, and business owners, through the process of using AR/VR technology in the process of creating exciting business ideas.

You will be technically aware of emerging trends, manage the requirements of hardware and software integration, be self-led, focused on creating accessibility and awareness of the kit to our student body. The ideal candidate will have a passion for constantly learning and evolving their knowledge of new applications for the hardware and software we purchase.

Strong communication skills are essential and there is a need to have the confidence to express themselves to all across the technical continuum. You will also be responsible for the management and upkeep of the kit, looking at usage and outcomes as well as maintaining condition and keeping security processes in place.

Skills and qualifications required

Technological competency is a vital aspect of how we can grow the number of students/graduates into start-ups whilst supporting students to achieve ever improving employment (self-employment) outcomes. As such you will possess suitable developer skills and experience of creating simulations/solutions using C++.

Communication and leadership skills are essential, a passion for technology and also embracing of an entrepreneurial culture. Creative and adaptable, you will draw on your own skills of business fundamentals to help people through certain challenging situations.

The culture of the centre is exploratory, creative with a willingness to experiment and try. The post-holders must be able to build networks quickly, instil trust in both external and internal relationships whilst promoting StudioX as a place to grow businesses and engage with our Essex Startups Team.
