HARMONI Optical Engineer and Procurement Manager Department of Physics - Denys Wilkinson Building, Keble Road, OxfordGrade 7: £32,817 - £40,322 with a discretionary range to £44,045 p.a. Applications are invited for an optical engineer and Procurement Manager for the spectrograph work package of HARMONI at ELT. The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 2 years, with a likely extension till the spectrographs are delivered. HARMONI is the first light spectrograph for the ELT, providing visible and near-infrared integral field spectroscopy, assisted by laser star and natural star adaptive optics. Oxford has a leadership role in building the HARMONI instrument, including responsibility for the design and development (including cryogenics testing) of four spectrograph units that form the core of the HARMONI integral field spectrograph (IFS). We are seeking an Optical Engineer who will be responsible for the specification and procurement of the opto-mechanical elements of the spectrograph sub-system. These include the collimators, fold mirrors, volume phase holographic gratings and cameras, made up of reflective and transmissive optical elements that are typically procured as custom items from specialist optics manufacturers worldwide. With its wide wavelength range and high throughput and image quality requirements, the HARMONI spectrograph optics are challenging to fabricate, and close liaison with manufacturers is required. You will be part of a vibrant spectrograph team at Oxford, including the Institute Project Manager, the (cryogenics) AIT expert, the optics expert, mechanical engineers, the HARMONI instrument scientist and the HARMONI Project administrator. In addition, there is assistance available from specialist services in the Oxford Physics department (e.g. Finance) and the University administration (e.g. tendering, contracts, VAT/duties). You will report to the Institute Project Manager, and will assist them with the writing and collating of technical documentation, as appropriate. Applicants should possess a Masters degree (min 2:1 qualification) in physics, astronomy or engineering or equivalent qualification and experience in high-end optical and mechanical component procurement. Desirable skills include a knowledge of optics manufacturing processes, and demonstrated abilities in data analysis/scientific computing. We are looking for a candidate with expertise in optics that includes an in-depth understanding of visible/near-infrared imaging systems, with at least basic skills in optical design software and component manufacturing specifications. As this is a technical role, there will not be an opportunity to engage with teaching.
