Computer Operator

Location: Wellingborough, Northants.

Salary: £22,000 - £28,000pa

Clearance: Baseline Clearance

Role Purpose

The successful candidate will need knowledge of operating multiple platform systems, including some of the following: IBM mainframe /Unix / AS400 as well as experience of operating within a data centre environment although some initial training will be provided.

As well as ensuring successful processing of the batch applications, the role includes handling incident escalation at a technical level, implementing changes to schedules & jobs and ensuring delivery of service to the account, whilst also carrying out media handling activities within the data centre. The role requires that the candidate will need to work the existing shift pattern for which a shift allowance is payable.

Key Accountabilities: Run, monitor and provide first level support to all batch schedules ensuring system availability within defined device levels.Understand all agreed call out and escalation procedures. Clear understanding of priorities and communication processes to support timely resolution of major incidents.Ensure suitable documentation is produced for the understanding and support of all systems and processes.Ensure adherence to support and implementation procedures, and Internal Audit recommendations.Monitoring of all operating consoles and responding promptly to all system messages and alerts.Prepare for transportation all data media required for delivery to the offsite storage company. Check all media received and restore to onsite location.Monitor all aspects of the Group Data Centre environment ensuring policy and procedures are applied.Provide an out of hour's service desk. Have the knowledge to apply 1st time fixes to stores and warehouse. Make sure all store 1st time fixes are maintained and that shift member has full knowledge on how to apply these fixes.

Essential Skills: Must be familiar with IBM mainframes and the associated operating system and applications such as Unix, AS400 and Tivoli Workload Scheduler, responding promptly to console messages, and have the ability to perform basic Job Control Language (JCL) amendments under direction.Ability to prioritise and multitask to ensure system downtime is minimisedMust have the ability to add in ad-hoc jobs/Applications when requested and monitor the error list and react to errors promptly

Desirable Skills:Operating skills and understanding of the batch schedule and housekeeping requirements.Understanding of batch schedule and backup requirements across all nodes and respond to console messages.Understanding of key user base and ability to navigate the system menus.Ability to perform IPL's and action post IPL checks on all systemsUnderstanding all Operational Key Performance Indicators and the potential risk/impacts if KPI's are breached
