Job Title: Student Placement - ScienceLocation: Nantgarw, CardiffSalary: £16,000 per annumJob Type: Full Time, Placement (09:00 to 17:00 Mon-Fri)Contract Period: July 2020 to August 2021Closing Date: 09:00 am Thursday, 13th February 2020The company is a customised enzyme discovery, development and manufacturing company based in the UK, with a subsidiary in Illinois, USA. They work with their customers, many of which are the top blue chip food companies, to provide unique enzyme solutions that will help them solve process problems, valorise waste, facilitate a biochemical reaction or deliver competitive advantage through using a unique product.Role Overview:You will be working on a specific company project to develop enzymes. This will be very much a 'hands on' placement and will involve working in the laboratories using various molecular and microbiology techniques. This will help you to develop knowledge of key steps in expression of enzymes including, but not limited to media preparation, plasmid preparation, transformation, expression trials and analysis.Furthermore, experiments will involve looking at multiple host organisms and potentially, enzyme production within pilot scale fermentation. By the end of the placement, you will have a detailed understanding of enzyme expression at laboratory and commercial scale. Job Duties:Technically competent in performing Enzyme Activity Assays and interpreting resultsTechnically competent in performing SDS PAGETechnically competent in performing Bradford Protein assaysTechnically competent in performing microbiology techniquesPlanning and organising within and outside of projectsMaintaining stock levels of buffer and mediaReporting data to NPD scientists in agreed timelineAnalyse, interpret and evaluate data and identify results requiring further investigation (seeking advice of senior colleagues as appropriate)Produce reliable, accurate data and keep accurate records of laboratory work undertaken and resultsWorking closely with New Product Development, Operations and Quality Control and teams when developing new process/technical capabilitiesPrepare for laboratory tasks using the appropriate scientific techniques, procedures and methodsWorking flexibly for accommodating out of hours' project tasksDemonstrate technical competence in the use of specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment, including calibration where requiredSupport scientists and help carry out tests, research and investigationsEnsure maintenance of equipment is carried out to agreed schedulesParticipate in continuous performance improvementCarry out the responsibilities stated in the Managing Director's Health & Safety Policy detailed in paragraphs 9 and 10 of his management directivesBe conversant with and adopt the procedures stated in the Quality & Environmental Management System and its supporting documentsKey Requirements:Completed a minimum of two years' as a University undergraduate studying biochemistry, biology, chemistry or a related disciplineDemonstrable general laboratory skillsDemonstrable an ability to produce accurate and reliable dataNeed to know:Fundamentals of Enzyme Assays and protein analysisKnowledge of lab equipmentGood laboratory practice and housekeepingMicrosoft OfficeEnvironmental, Health & Safety, Food safety, HACCP & GMPTrained in the awareness and relevance of their individual activities in contributing to food safety, emphasising the importance of effective communicationExpected behaviour:High quality work on timeTechnical/work-based skillsResults DrivenPlanning & organisingTeam workExcellent communicationIf you enjoy practical work along with an enthusiastic approach and willingness to learn, are conscientious, friendly and have the motivation to succeed, they would love to learn more about you.Previous student placements have resulted in long term employment at the company.Please click on the APPLY button and CHECK YOUR EMAILS for the link to the Company's careers page where you can then submit your CV and covering letter.Candidates with experience of: Student, Graduate, Lab Assistant, Research and Development, R&D, Laboratory Analyst, Lab Technician, Lab Scientist, Laboratory Assistant, Lab Analyst, Laboratory Technician, HND Qualification, Lab Tester may also be considered for this role.
