Team Overview

Our client uses wireless telegraphy every day to communicate over the airwaves, including voice messages, data, remote control, navigation (GPS) or using radar to find the location of objects.

It is the role of Spectrum Engineering Systems Team to ensure that our client has the monitoring and measurement tools required to support its duties such as informing spectrum policy, ensuring spectrum is used efficiently and can investigate cases of harmful interference.

Purpose of the Role

This role is part of a small team responsible for developing hardware and enhancing software/systems accumulating spectrum usage data using an assortment of radio monitoring systems (deployed across the UK and Northern Ireland) in order to determine information relating to radio spectrum usage. The team also develops novel technical solutions as part of a wide range of spectrum engineering projects.

Based in the organisation’s Baldock office.

Requirements of the Role

- Developing and enhancing the software required to operate COTS and bespoke radio monitoring systems according to business needs
- Developing bespoke hardware solutions for novel monitoring/measurement project requirements
- Ensuring the data collected by the remote sites is downloaded to a central location and is an accurate representation of the spectrum usage in the monitoring location using knowledge of Radio Systems, RF propagation etc
- Working with a wide range of ICT/networking equipment, such as routers and switches etc
- Distilling large amounts of data collected by using a number of tools and knowledge in order to turn the raw data into intelligence and subsequently produce reports as necessary
- Working to install and maintain remote technical systems at appropriate locations according to operational needs
- Flexible approach to duties and changing priorities as some attendance may be required at remote site locations around the UK
- The work undertaken covers a wide range of technologies so part of the role will involve research to ensure that the testing is carried out to the highest industry standards
- Working with a wide range of test instrumentation
- Assist with other reasonable tasks as instructed by the Technical Systems Manager

Skills, knowledge and experience

- The successful applicant must have a blend of technical and practical radio engineering skills in a test environment
- Knowledge & practical experience of all aspects of spectrum engineering including propagation mechanisms, spectrum monitoring, radio interference mechanisms, electromagnetic compatibility and radio frequency measurement techniques
- Good knowledge of ICT equipment, ideally Cisco trained
- Programming experience in Python, C and web based languages on both Windows and Linux platforms
- A logical, analytical and inquisitive mind with appropriate experience to recognise when things are not as they initially appear and have a desire to understand and resolve the situation. You must be self-starting and demonstrate the initiative and experience to solve problems and find solutions to issues as they occur
- Good computer literacy particularly in Windows 10/Linux and including the MS Office suite and writing VBA macros
- A good working knowledge of the composition of the UK Radio Spectrum including an appreciation of what types of radio systems operate in various bands
- Experience of working in a technical laboratory and RF field measurements
- Clear accurate reporting and presentation for both technical & non-technical recipients with the ability to deal confidently with staff, customers and the general public at an appropriate level of detail
- Ability to prioritise own workload to deliver high quality results in a timely manner
- Strong interpersonal skills as they will be working in a flexible and dynamic team environment
- A UK driving licence
