At the Home Office, our task is simple - to keep the UK safe. Doing this means working across a huge range of projects, dealing with some of the most high-profile and important issues the country faces. But protecting millions of people requires cutting-edge technology platforms and exceptional engineers who can expand our capabilities. If you're talented, tenacious and forward-thinking, you'll find yourself in good company. Join us at the heart of government, take advantage of huge opportunities and help us build an unrivalled department.

You'll take a central role in developing our core products, working across a number of exciting initiatives that are defining the way we'll work for years to come. Based in our Sheffield Delivery Centre (SDC), you'll also take on brand-new ‘greenfield' projects, triaging and making decisions on critical systems as well as writing clean, secure and open code using a test-driven approach.

On top of this, you'll work with technical experts to evolve new approaches and solutions, constantly improving the way we develop and deploy. Balancing technical and business considerations, you'll be a vital source of advice on design choices and software quality.

You should already have considerable experience developing applications in an agile, multi-disciplinary environment. You should bring good experience in a core language (Java, JavaScript, Python or C# being top of the list) and have an expertise somewhere - be it implementing new and complex  RESTful APIs, building accessible frontends with reusable components or something else. Whatever your experience you should be familiar with agile approaches, test-driven development and preferably the GDS Service Standard. You may also be a frontend, backend or full stack developer looking to shift focus - if so, we have really broad opportunities and will fully support a transition.

Whatever your role at the Home Office, we'll support your career plans and evolve your skills with exceptional tools, training and coaching. There's also a wealth of opportunity to move around and work across different teams. As a Civil Service employee, you'll be entitled to a wide range of benefits, including generous annual leave, flexible working, childcare and travel allowances, numerous staff networks and clubs, onsite facilities and a Civil Service pension.
