3rd February 2020 The UK Atomic Energy Authority seeks applications from world-class scientists and engineers for leadership roles to help accelerate the commercialisation of fusion energy. The UK Government recently announced £222m of funding for the first 5-year phase of the STEP programme. STEP - Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production - aims to deliver a prototype fusion reactor by 2040 that will deliver net electricity to the UK grid, paving the way for a commercial fleet of fusion reactors. In this first phase, the UK Atomic Energy Authority will lead a national programme involving industry and universities, to deliver a viable concept design for the STEP Prototype Reactor. This design activity will inform the strategy of future phases.
STEP is an ambitious and adventurous programme that must bring together some of the world`s best scientists and engineers, whilst adopting a collaborative approach to combine the strengths of UKAEA with industry, universities and other organisations to succeed. To this end, UKAEA is seeking applications to Programme Manage Tranche 1 of the £222M Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) Programme which would transition to Tranche 2 in 2024. To succeed in this role, you will be required to:
- Provide robust leadership and management of the programme
- Execute the STEP programme to a high standard according to established project, programme and technical management processes, leading to delivered solutions of an engineering integrity commensurate with nuclear operations
- Build a high performing, engaged, empowered and diverse programme team
- Establish and maintain oversight (governance and assurance) of projects within the programme, particularly estimate formation, planning, cost forecast and monitoring, corporate reporting and metrics, risk management, corporate / Government Gateway Reviews, overall execution strategy delivery and benefits management
- Maintain effective communication within the programme and assist the Programme Director through commercially complex interactions with stakeholders The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. UKAEA also works with industry and other third parties to develop new technologies currently in Remote Handling and Materials research. Following recent UK funding two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation are being built. -A proven track record of delivering high profile, fast track VUCA programmes to budget, time and cost in a relevant industry.
-Professional Programme Management or Project Management qualification with extensive demonstration of its application.
-Strong commercial awareness with the ability to make sound economic decisions that maximise project value given the strategic position of the organisation
-Excellent communication, influencing, negotiating and collaboration skills
-Experience of management of significant (£100M`s) budget
-Experience as a line manager, with excellent people management skills ideally of a team working in a matrix Special requirements:
