The Opportunity:

We have an exciting new opportunity for a Data and Analysis Product Development Lead for our MalariaGen project, part of the Parasites and Microbes Team at the Sanger Institute.

About the Project:

The team was recently awarded funding by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with the primary outcome of malaria control programs and policymakers using genetic data, integrated with epidemiological data, to make more informed decisions. To achieve this outcome we need to operationalise our leading malaria genomics research to create a set of open software products that underpin a surveillance service generating curated malaria genetic, epidemiological data in near real time.

Our work to date has prototyped all of the necessary tools to develop an initial set of pipelines and analysis tools that create both curated analysis ready genetic data and curated analysis ready epidemiology data.  However, to enable operation at scale, these tools need to be re-engineered to professional commercial software standards.

About the Role:

The Data and Analysis Product Development lead will working in close collaboration with the MalariaGEN Product Manager and the leadership team to develop a series of software products, aligned with the product roadmap and high- level architecture, that deliver high quality, high throughput genetic and epidemiological data from whole genome and amplicon sequence reads from both malaria bloodspots and mosquitos.

The role will involve high-level strategic collaboration with our partners as well as leading a small team. The Data and Analysis product development lead will be responsible for managing a £3m budget and developing a strategy that achieves the project aims. One of the most complex aspects of the role will be to establish clear lines of communication and influence with multiple international, external stakeholders and across internal teams.

About You:

You will have significant experience in building reliable and accurate, commercial grade, software pipelines and environments that automatically process complex data that is returned to customers as part of a global service operation. You will also have experience of managing, coaching and developing a high-performing team and be a confident communicator You will be a strategic thinker with a strong negotiation skill-set and the ability to lead and influence over a continuum of stakeholders (international internal and external) and at varying levels. The ability to work in a frequently changing environment with the capability to interpret management information to amend plans in key as will be the need to prioritise and manage your own workload and deliver agreed activities consistently on time.  

Essential Skills:

Significant experience in building reliable and accurate, commercial grade, software pipelines and environments that automatically process complex data that is returned to customers as part of a global service operation 

Experience of developing software for deployment in cloud environments 

Experience of managing a team and coaching and developing staff 

Exceptional interpersonal skills 

Possess persuasive negotiation skills and the ability to lead over a continuum of stakeholders at varying levels 

Ability to quickly understand scientific, technical and process challenges and break down complex problems into actionable steps 

Ability to work in a frequently changing environment with the capability to interpret management information to amend plans 

 Ability to prioritise, manage workload, and deliver agreed activities consistently on time 

Strategic thinking, ability to see the ‘bigger picture' 

Track record of delivering results quickly 

Experience with Agile development methods

Experience with facilitating teams to identify process improvement and celebrate great team working.

Ideal Skills:

Development of genetic pipelines and algorithms

Understand GATK 

Significant experience in establishing and leading teams through periods of major change
