Introduction
Our client in Southampton is a world-leading manufacturer of Infrared detectors covering a broad range of wavelengths. These devices have widespread uses in industrial and civil applications as well as fulfilling many military requirements. Leonardo also work closely with the scientific community to develop technologies in the Astronomy and Space sector.
Main Purpose of the Job
Our client in Southampton requires an Exp Test Engineer with the capability to cover three main areas of responsibility: To support production test equipment used in the manufacture of Infrared detectorsTo assist in the design, development and transfer to production of new test solutionsCarry out production qualification activities using Environmental Stress Screening techniques and equipment.Key Responsibility Areas Typically the candidate will spend approximately 50% of their time supporting test equipment in manufacturing, responding to equipment down issues, fault finding, resolving and returning validated equipment back to production. The working environments are environmentally controlled and include clean rooms. Product volumes are increasing so the ideal candidate will have Exp of working in a volume production environment and of using Continuous Improvement tools and techniques.
The candidate will also support the wider Test Engineering team with the assembly and commissioning of new test equipment; typically involving design/assembly of looms, building racks of COTS equipment, producing system drawings and written operational instructions; transfer to production and provision of training to shop floor staff. The ideal candidate will also have capability and Exp of hardware and software design in order to provide additional support in the design and delivery test hardware such as test PCB's, product interface electronics and test software in either C++ or LabVIEW.
The third aspect of the role requires the candidate to deliver a product qualification against a published plan, involving sine and random vibration equipment, shock and thermal cycling down to cryogenic temperatures. Ideally the candidate will have knowledge of this, but on the job training will be provided as required.
Occasionally other activities may be required, including conducting non-standard product testing; supporting estimates for bids; contributing to test strategy discussions and 5 year plans for test development to meet business needs etc.
The candidate should accept a changing role that is expected to be varied.
Skills, Qualifications and Knowledge Required
Essential HND or higher in Physics, Electronic Engineering, Software Engineering (or be able to prove an equivalent level of Exp and knowledge).Strong technical skills in diagnosing to root cause problems associated with test equipmentEvidence of good organisation, planning, cost control in execution of work.Ability to work closely in a team with other engineering and science disciplines, and shop floor production staffHands-on laboratory test and measurement Exp Practical Exp in product qualification applying environmental stress screening methods adhering to industry standards (MIL, Def Stan etc)Willing to be flexible, independent and self-sufficient with excellent communication skills Desirable
Ability to take a novel requirements and deliver a commissioned bespoke working test solution ultimately suitable for production in a volume environmentKnowledge of test solutions in the optical domain, ideally Infrared, including pyroelectric single element sensorsCertified qualifications or equivalent Exp in software, firmware or hardware developmentExp of LabVIEW or C++Knowledge of analogue micro-electronicsExp of applying SPC and Lean TechniquesCapability of soldering PCB surface mount components and simple loom fabricationThis is an urgent requirement, send cv for an immediate response !
