The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Home Office. We provide information to employers and other organisations in England and Wales (and barring information only in Northern Ireland) so they can make informed recruitment and licensing decisions, especially for employees and volunteers working with vulnerable groups. We also determine whether an individual can take up relevant posts by making decisions about inclusion on a barred list.

DBS has an ambitious strategy over the next three years. We are embarking on a significant digital transformation programme, changing the way we deliver services to our customers, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the end-to-end service and providing digital channels for customers to support the Government's digital strategy.

DBS Digital is a high-performing team and we are looking for someone who can create high-quality, user-focused content. You will be self-motivated, self-managed, talented and enthusiastic, skilled in the identification, articulation and facilitation of user needs and translating these into Content using agile methodologies.

You will be part of a multi-disciplined digital team, working closely with the Product Owner, Business Analyst, User Researchers and Data Analysts to ensure that existing digital products are continuously improved and aligned to Government Digital Service standards, with new products identified, developed and delivered which meet future user needs. You will also manage a small Content team and mentor junior content designers.

Key accountabilities - you will;

Be accountable for all content on the DBS basic digital service, managing the needs of the 400k users

Maintain a government digital service with the ability to enable users to succeed first time without need for additional guidance or Webchat, ensuring DBS safeguarding reputation to deliver excellent digital services is maintained.

Take complex language and processes and make them simple to understand

Make the case for user-focused design

Lead the design and implementation of content and format strategies, directing its implementation to ensure user needs are being met

Develop and manage relationships - both within GDS and with other government departments. Manage the relationship between the digital team and DBS Content Manager for Gov.uk. Managing relationships with subject matter experts to make sure content is accurate

Identify and implement the right formats to comply with GDS style templates. If we don't have one, we'll want you to suggest ideas or identify the gap.

Develop content plans and attend planning meetings with contacts

Make sure appropriate policy and legal checks within other parts of government happen, and that content is published quickly and efficiently

Be responsible for clearly communicating DBS' obligations in all statutory and regulatory requirements relating to on-line transactional services including but not limited to Cookies Policy; Privacy Impact Assessment; Data Protection etc.

Identify ways to improve the content and the product

Provide constructive criticism to your colleagues to improve everyone's skills and work

Work in an agile environment, be at ease with rapidly changing deadlines, workloads and goals.

Able to focus on outcomes rather than solutions and activities.

Desirable criteria:

Awareness and understanding of agile methodology and how to apply an agile mindset to all aspects of work.

Experience of writing online content

Experience of working in a culture of continuous delivery and improvement.

An understanding of user experience and user centred design.

Knowledge of the Government Digital Service (GDS) Digital by Default Standard.
