The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is undergoing significant digital transformation. With this brings an exciting opportunity for a Principal Software Engineer to take on a completely new role within the organisation supporting our digital transformation and data platform work.

UKHO is a world leading hydrographic and marine geospatial software and data solutions agency based in award winning offices in Taunton, Somerset. The work we do makes a real direct impact in maritime navigation, safety, security and marine development around the UK and worldwide. The work is both rewarding and stimulating.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will be a key decision-maker in a to-be-defined technical environment, leading several highly capable software engineering teams. You will play a large part in the technical design of the system, bringing the best of modern software engineering to this largely green-field project. In this technical and leadership role your average day may involve:

Working closely with other technical stakeholders to ensure coordination of related activities across the organisation

Implementing the system using cloud infrastructure, distributed computer architecture, orchestration technologies, containers, event driven and serverless technologies

Implementing and advocating use of modern software engineering practices within the data platform team/s, including CI/CD, test automation

Leading the technical delivery team and coordinating technical work potentially across more than one team

Identifying and championing the adoption of new technologies

Ensuring the data platform integrates with other technical business systems

Interacting and supporting the delivery manager for the delivery of the data platform

If you enjoy leading and coordinating large technical projects and you have significant experience in senior software engineering this role is for you. To be successful in your application you will need to evidence

Deep understanding and experience of using modern software engineering and DevOps practices

Experience of leading technical teams and delivering complex, multi-faceted software engineering projects

Experience designing and building data platforms or systems using cloud infrastructure, distributed computer architecture, orchestration technologies, containers

Experience influencing technical decisions and coordinating activities across many stakeholders
