Job Description - Principal Software Design Engineer
Based: Cambridge, full time
Job Purpose:
To act as delegated authority in their particular skill area to the engineering managerTo provide technical expertise and guidance to projects and more junior engineers within skill areaJob Scope:
Responsible for technical management of a small team of engineersEnsure timely delivery to customersEnsure quality output from software design engineers
Key Responsibilities:
To mentor and coach more junior engineersTo provide technical supervision and review in their skill areaTo manage technical risk in their area within allocated projectsContributes ideas towards company strategyTo support the engineering management team as requiredTo support bids and projects as required by the Engineering ManagerTo resolve technical problems associated with assigned productsStrive to continuously improve the processes and work instructions which they useTo carry out engineering activity in accordance with engineering proceduresTo support the preparation and updating of project plans for assigned projectsSupport the recruitment as required by the Engineering ManagerResponsible for assisting project leaders to deliver, attending project review meetings as requiredProvide adequate constructive challenge in design reviews to identify and mitigate any key issuesBuild and maintain excellent internal and external customer relationshipsMonitor work performed by the team to ensure that high technical standards are achieved within timescales and budgetPrepare reports for internal and external useKeep up to date with new developments within the market place to ensure the company remains at the cutting edgePrepare and deliver presentations as requiredBe prepared to travel to support current and future products on customers sites around the worldThere may be additional activities to perform from time to time in order to maximise the contribution to Ultra Electronics Precision Control Systems goals and objectives (include in all to capture any other duties not stated)
Knowledge, Skills:
Ability to manage small size team
Ability to manage software subcontracts
Ability to performance manage
Technically competent to assess risk in their area and honestly presenting the detail and the wider impact
Familiar with appropriate standards within area
Work effectively with other Engineers and Project managers
Manage technical risk
Financially aware of the consequences of decisions
Specific:
Be familiar with design and analysis and test techniques for safety critical real time software
Be conversant with DO178
Be conversant with configuration control
Extensive exp with all parts of the software lifecycle
Be conversant with safety and certification requirements for aerospace software
Be familiar with the responsibilities of acting as a Compliance Verification Engineer
Be able and willing to participate and organise product investigations resulting from aircraft incidents
Be an enthusiastic participant with other skill groups within projects
Exp with formal requirements and verification
Desirable:
Exposure with some of the following is required:
Familiarity with Electronic systems
Familiarity with system design practice
Qualifications:
Electronics/Systems Engineering Degree or equivalent
Extensive knowledge of software design in a safety critical environment
