Site Reliability Engineers (AWS)
We're hiring Lead and Senior Reliability Engineers with a background in Amazon Web Services to work on one of the biggest digital transformations in Europe.
Here at DWP we're applying the latest digital thinking to the large heritage services that still handle huge volumes of our customer's pension and benefit payments. The department is investing heavily in SRE to maintain and modernise these services. It's a unique challenge.
For us, SRE is about applying software engineering principles and practices to the world of service delivery and operations. It's about prioritising reliability over new features, making sure services are stable, secure and available for when our millions of users need them most.
You and your role
This is an SRE role with a focus on AWS skills. You might be an experienced software engineer, with some helpful consultancy background, able to apply software engineering techniques to solve IT Operations and Infrastructure problems. Or you could already be working in DevOps or SRE, looking for a new challenge with real scale, purpose and complexity.
You'll find that here, along with a huge, diverse portfolio of projects and programmes with the power to improve the lives of real people.
A hands-on engineering leader, you'll have chance to develop and implement best practice across SRE. You drive continuous improvement, while maintaining application capacity and performance. Scripting to automate and design out failures before they happen, you and your teams will create ultra-scalable, ultra-reliable systems and high quality application code for DWP.
Our SRE practice combines software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant systems. We make sure that our SREs are involved from the initial application idea all the way through the application lifecycle to decommissioning.
What skills, knowledge and experience are we looking for?
DWP operate a Hybrid Cloud Platform incorporating Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure and On Premise Hosting (OPH). In this role we're looking for someone with a background in AWS.
Experience with application and use of the AWS-specific skills

S3 (Encryption of buckets, limiting access)

Experience with Jenkins / GitLab
Experience in Git for code management
Experience with Application Insights
Experience with ServiceNow or similar ITIL tools

Experience with Containers/Docker/Kubernetes is not essential, but beneficial
You should also have experience with Agile/DevOps delivery methodologies and best practice.
Where You'll Work
You'll join our team in one of our digital hubs in either Blackpool, Leeds, London, Manchester, Newcastle or Sheffield. We're easy-to-reach with great facilities.
You will work alongside people who care passionately about public service, making a difference and delivering for our customers. Few other organisations globally provide the same opportunity to apply next-generation digital technology on a massive scale to issues which touch the lives of so many.
We are an equal opportunity employer and we welcome applications regardless of age, gender, race or sexuality.
In return for your skills we offer competitive salary up to £78,605 for Lead Engineers and up to £68,292 for Senior Engineers. You can apply for both roles or specify a preference.
