Data Scientist

Would you like the opportunity to be part of an emerging and growing department with the chance to influence and scope team development? We currently have a vacancy for a Data Scientist at our site in Warton.

As a Data Scientist, you will be working in a cutting-edge area of growth within the business, developing skills within data science applied to advanced aerospace projects, including future programmes. The role offers the opportunity to use your data science skills in a highly interesting discipline.

We are running a number of projects that look to take real data generated from our Support Service, Customer Operations and business activities to drive efficiency and offer new and exciting capabilities to our customers.

As a Data Scientist, you will be expected explore datasets ranging from our air business covering the full product and service lifecycle, applying advanced statistical approaches. For example, typical work would be creating code in Python and other Languages within an Analytic framework to create data exploitation applications and provide insights from the data.

The role combines technical and commercial aspects and will involve interaction with suppliers, customers, domain experts from across the Air business to deliver tangible data exploitation capabilities and services. You will also have the opportunity to shape and influence the development of this and the wider advanced analytics capability within Support Services and the Air business as a whole.

 

Your main responsibilities as a Data Scientist will involve:

Managing technical projects competently in order to ensure adherence with baseline schedule, scope and costs

Developing and deploying machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities for the benefit of BAE Systems

Developing new algorithms in a variety of application areas including design, manufacturing, maintenance, situational awareness and autonomy

Taking responsibility for technical development of applying machine learning algorithms across new development areas

Maintaining knowledge in this area of expertise, keeping up to date with current developments and events

Understanding of the customers' business issues and needs, both obvious and underlying

Responding to customer requests, maintaining clear communication, correcting problems and taking action to make things better for the customer

 

Your skills and qualifications:

Relevant industry experience or Masters, PhD or relevant post-doctoral experience (computer science/ physics/ mathematics/ STEM subject)

Bachelor's and/or master's degree, preferably in Computer Science, or equivalent experience

Ability to write high performance production quality code

Demonstrate proficiency in coding, e.g. C++/ Python/ MATLAB/R

Demonstrate knowledge in some of the following areas: Machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, pattern recognition, large-scale data mining

Some experience working on classification problems would be advantageous

Industry experience building and productionizing innovative end-to-end advanced analytical capabilities or getting insights from data would also be advantageous

Location: Warton

Salary: £37,654+
