The award-winning Fast Stream is the leadership development programme that develops the highest potential graduates to become the future leaders of the Civil Service.  Joining the Fast Stream offers the unique opportunity to make a difference to the whole of society. The Civil Service supports the government of the day to implement its policies effectively. Fast Streamers help to shape the decisions that will affect everyone's lives and to deliver the public services that we all rely on.

Project Delivery Fast Streamers enjoy unprecedented scale and challenge in their work.  There are a wide variety of opportunities to work on projects that deliver huge benefits and improvements to our society, from building hospitals and railways, to providing cutting-edge digital services. These projects are transforming the way we live and work and have a positive impact on people across the UK.

Joining the Project Delivery Fast Stream will give you the chance to build professional project skills whilst playing an active role in some of the most significant projects around the world.

You will enjoy fast-paced projects of unparalleled scale and complexity. This 4-year programme will give you experience at each stage of a project lifecycle. Each posting will allow you to build on your core skills in project delivery. It is expected that our Fast Streamers will undertake a mix of Specialist, Generalist, and Leadership project delivery roles whilst on the scheme.

These are just some of the roles and projects that our current Fast Streamers are working on:

scoping the benefits and impacts associated with increasing airport capacity.

working across departments to support economic growth and decentralisation of powers in cities across the UK

supporting the High Speed Rail project as an Assistant Project Manager.

Projects such as these will allow you to learn a range of skills and methodologies that will support you in becoming a future leader of the Civil Service. The minimum starting salary is £28,000. Successful completion of the scheme, with promotion, will see you earn around £45,000 to £55,000.

Whilst the official scheme length is 4 years, there will be early exit opportunities for those who are ready for promotion ahead of this time. There are many factors that determine if someone is ready for early exit, and we would look at each request on a case by case basis.

You receive support and training throughout your time on the scheme, including:

Mentoring from a mentor from within the Project Delivery profession (this will generally be a Senior Civil Servant with many years of experience).

Support from your activity manager will support you in day-to-day activities.

A cohort leader will work with you to ensure you are getting the wider learning and development opportunities that you'll need.

Attend Fast Stream learning events for you to develop your leadership skills.

Undertake Project Management qualifications relevant to your placements.

We support applicants with health conditions, learning difficulties and disabilities, with their applications and through their Civil Service careers. We operate a Guaranteed Interview Scheme. If you have a disability and meet the minimum qualifying criteria for your chosen scheme, you may choose to skip part of the first stage of the assessment process.

You can choose up to 4 scheme preferences when you apply to the Fast Stream. So, whether you are looking for your first graduate role, seeking to return to work, or change profession, the Fast Stream is the ideal place to progress a meaningful, fulfilling career.
