Join the Imaging Group to support x-ray and electron microscopy.

Your role

Electron and X-ray techniques are used to explore the properties of complex materials across different time and spatial scales and share many common measurement modes (Diffraction, EDS/XRF, EELS/XANES) and can also share new technique developments in areas such as compressed sampling and ptychography.

This role will be to support data processing activities at I08, I14 and the electron microscopy facility, ePSIC, by assisting users in interpeting data, developing new computational methods for both acquisition and analysis and developing expertise in data analysis within the user community (workshops, documentation, tutorials).

As part of a team, within the Imaging Group, you will help drive beamline scientific output and beamline development by working closely with users and Imaging group scientists to improve core capabilities and to develop and introduce new methods also working closely with the experienced software scientists and engineers of the Data Analysis Software Group.  This work will impact on how Diamond scientists and users both acquire and process their data and will help to drive research in areas such as photovoltaics or corrosion.

This role will allow you to develop and further hone your expertise within an internationally renowned multidisciplinary environment driven by the pursuit of scientific excellence.

Your new team

You will work as part of an experienced team of researchers, within the Imaging group and Data Analysis software groups to add to the extensive expertise that the team has in experimental method development, data collection, data processing and interpretation. You will collaborate with other team members and our internal and external scientific users. You will have the opportunity to help others develop professionally and to create and deliver new and exciting projects. We envisage that your experience and underlying knowledge will be an indispensable asset to ensure further development of the capabilities of the Imaging Group.

You need to be proficient in numerical methods and technologies such as Java and Python and have ideally have experience of in either microscopy tools (e.g. Hyperspy), x-ray diffraction (e.g. pyFAI) or spectroscopic data tools.  You will hold practical experience of the full Software Development Lifecycle and above all, demonstrate a passion to learn and think creatively in the solutions we provide to enable science.

About the Imaging group

The Diamond Imaging Group is formed by seven facilities performing imaging experiments across a range of length and times scales:  ePSIC the electron Physical Science Imaging Centre, I08 the Scanning X-ray microscopy beamline, DIAD, the Dual imaging and Diffraction beamline, I12-JEEP the Joint Engineering and Joint Engineering, Environmental, and Processing beamline, I13-1 the Coherent imaging beamline, I3-2 the imaging beamline and I14 the hard x-ray nanoprobe beamline.
