A long-lasting career,
with long-lasting impact.
At MI5, we protect the UK from a range of threats, including terrorism and espionage. It's fascinating work with real purpose. But we couldn't do any of this without our software engineers. That's where you come in. Developing and maintaining essential tools and capabilities, you'll keep the UK safe. With a hands-on approach, your impact will reach right across MI5 - from investigations to analysis. With an eye on the future, you'll inspire members of your team, grow our engineering capability and shape the direction of unique products. It means you'll work closely with delivery leads, product owners and architects, challenging traditional ways of doing things. You'll come up against some incredibly interesting challenges, whilst working within our strict legal frameworks. And because the work is unlike anything you'll find elsewhere, we have a huge focus on personal and professional development. You can realise your passion - whether that's working on multiple products to develop breadth of experience or build deep technical specialism in one area. Whilst much of our work is secret, we'll support you in gaining external accreditation to demonstrate your skills. Plus, you'll even have the chance to work across the wider intelligence community. It all comes down to keeping the UK safe, while growing your career in the way you want to.

We're after people who want to get the best out of the tech world. We'll need you to have engineering delivery experience in at least one of the following: object-oriented programming, data storage, front-end web technology, big data technology or middleware and messaging. And while technical qualifications would be a bonus, we'll need you to talk to all types of people and adapt confidently to changing situations. Most importantly, you'll be passionate about learning new skills and you'll care about what you do. MI5 is an Equal Opportunities employer, committed to reflecting the society we protect. Our recruitment process is fair, transparent and based on merit. We particularly welcome applications from diverse and under-represented groups. To apply, please visit our website using the link/button provided. To be eligible to apply, you must meet our residency criteria. You must be born or naturalised British citizen and one of your parents must be a British citizen or have substantial ties to the UK. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for nine out of the last 10 years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. You will nonetheless be considered if you have, for example, served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty's Government, studied abroad, or lived overseas with your patents. You can apply at the age of 17 years and 6 months, if successful you will not be offered a start date prior to your 18th birthday. Discretion is vital. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or close family member. Please note, you should only launch your application from within the UK. If you are based overseas, you should wait until you visit the UK to launch an application. Applying from outside the UK will impact on our ability to progress your application. Further information on our eligibility criteria can be found on the How to Apply section.
