Yard Crew

Would you like to work with BAE Systems Small Boat business? Within Small boats, the team manufacture and repair a wide range of military specification small boats for both the Ministry of Defence and other military and commercial customers. Yard Crew will work within the manufacturing department of Small Boats at our site in Portsmouth Naval Base.

The Yard Crew are set up as a dedicated 2 man team responsible for all lifting and slinging and boat movements within the operation. These movements extend to using a variety of mechanical handling machines such as Over Head Traveller Crane, Fork Lift Trucks, Tow Trucks and Trailers, operating a MOD owned boat hoist as well as driving our company owned, lorry mounted Hiab crane.

The team can expect approx. 4000 separate lifts to be undertaken per year. Boat movements are a key activity to the success of the operation, working alongside Shipwright/Boat Builders, Laminators, Mechanics and Electricians, the multi-skilled trades work closely to undertake the individual boat work packages but it is the role of the Yard Crew to ensure all boats are moved to their required locations and in a safe and timely manner.

Your main responsibilities as a Yard Crew will involve:

HIAB lorry operator licence together with HGV C class licence

Dealing with technical problem solving/diagnostic ability

Understanding of PUWER and LOLER regulations

Knowledge of all hand signals associated with lifting

Understanding of de-rating all lifting equipment and accessories when used at an angle

Taking the lead of standard lifts when required Assessing weight of loads to be lifted

Working with floating assets and ensuring they are secured appropriately

Working with Contractor support vessel teams Your skills and qualifications: Essential:

Have completed either an appropriate trade apprentice or hold an equivalent qualification

Fork Lift Truck operators' licence Tow truck and trailer operator's licence Overhead Crane operators' licence Knowledge between standard and complex lifts Lifting and slinging qualification Good knowledge of vessel berthing principles Must be able to work in confined spaces Desirable: Clean UK driving license - preferably HGV What we're looking for in you:

You will have good communication skills with the ability to use your own initiative. You will be a team player and have experience working to deadlines.
