My client who is based in Preston is looking for a 3rd Line Firewall Engineer.

This is to work within the firewall support team for a large government contract. The role is to assist in the management and support of over 120 firewalls in a complex multichannel architecture

environment in order to provide boundary and perimeter security for this key government department.

This role includes the implementation of complex firewall rule changes, troubleshooting and resolution of incidents.

It also includes the review of security vulnerabilities and delivery of enhancements to maintain the security and integrity of the customers' network and data.

The successful applicant will need to be able to work independently or as an effective member of a team. The role holder will also need to be able to effectively manage their own work stack and to work collaboratively across functional team boundaries both within and external to the firewall team.

The role also requires that any intrusive work will need to be performed within an approved change i.e after 9pm on weekdays and after 5pm on a Saturday or Sunday.

Managing Our Performance - Accountable for providing the following:-

Activities which will comprise the analysis, testing, integrating and managing the components and models

for Checkpoint Firewalls, IDS equipment, Cisco Firewalls & as required other network equipment.

Provide on-going development, maintenance & support for the above.

Investigate and resolve faults relating to the above or escalate with 3rd party suppliers, to agreed SLA & KPI.

Ability to demonstrate competence and interpretation of the available Network Management and diagnostic tools.

Provide Network expertise to assist the Project Teams to deliver new solutions in to live support, as defined

by customer requirements.

Provide assistance and support for the above.

Installation of new equipment as required.

To evaluate, test & install software and hardware maintenance upgrades provided by suppliers.

To lead problem diagnosis and resolution liaising with technical manager, peers, suppliers and customer/

developer groups where appropriate.

To ensure operational procedures are in place, maintained and followed as approved.

General Skill:

To have a good understanding of the ITIL disciplines.

To have practical experience of continuous improvement methods and techniques.

Ability to develop long-term trusting relationships with clients, suppliers & key stakeholders.

Ability to demonstrate good diagnostic, investigative and troubleshooting skills.

Ability to put across technical ideas in business language.

Ability to lead technical discussions in all circumstances.

Role Specific Skills Required

Analysis and resolution of all customer related firewall incidents.

Analysis and reporting of all customer firewall problem investigations.

Implementation and administration of all customer firewall changes.

Monitoring and trend analysis of all customer firewalls from secure platform.

Collaborative working with the customers other service providers.

Review and mitigation UNIRAS vulnerability reports.

Technical review of project deliveries and acceptance into service/support.

Production and review of local work instructions.

Proven experience of providing operational firewall support for a large data network.

Technical requirements:

Checkpoint Certified (R.80)- CCSA minimum or equivalent experience to include excellent

knowledge of Checkpoint Firewalls, Firewall Clustering, Firewall VPNs and Authentication.

Excellent knowledge of Firewall management tools - i.e. SmartView, SmartMonitor etc.

Excellent understanding of Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDS).

Excellent understanding of Cisco Security Devices, i.e. FWSM & ASA etc.

Certified to CCNA Cisco Routing and Switching minimum or equivalent

experience/knowledge.

Good understanding of Unix File Systems relevant to Checkpoint Firewall and associated

commands.
