Software Engineer

Would you like to work as part of a team developing a variety of complex bespoke engineering software applications for designing and supporting supersonic fighter jets?

As part of the Engineering Systems Competency Centre (ESCC) Application Development team you will be working on developing software, technical aspects and the through life support of Engineering software. This includes Aerodynamics, Structural Engineering, Product Lifecycle Management, Design Engineering, Flight Systems, Operational Analysis and Supportability applications ensuring that a high quality service and support to users of the toolset to enable the Engineering customers to achieve their business goals. Technologies and tools we use include C++, Java and JEE, Fortran, SQL, PL/SQL, Visual Studio, NetBeans, Eclipse, JDeveloper, SQL Developer, Git, Jira, UML, Enterprise Architect.

We are a continuously improving, expanding team based at Warton near Preston, surrounded by lovely Lancashire countryside, close to the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales and also Manchester and Liverpool.

Your main responsibilities as a Software Engineer will involve:

Developing bespoke, specialist Engineering software used in the development of fast jets

Working in a team of software developers using a variety of software technologies such as Java, C++, JEE, Fortran, SQL, PL/SQL, Visual Studio, NetBeans, Eclipse, JDeveloper, SQL Developer, Git, Jira, UML, Enterprise Architect

Providing 3rd Line Support and support to test teams

Delivering continuous improvement through recommending appropriate capability needs and process improvements

Completing software development activities in line with schedule and quality requirements

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

Experience working in software development

Good knowledge of software development techniques and practices

Good knowledge of software development lifecycle methodologies

Programming in a modern object oriented language (e.g. Java, C++, C#)

Software development lifecycle tools (e.g. issue tracking, version control and continuous integration)

Desirable:

UNIX / Linux experience

Unit testing

SQL database experience

What we're looking for in you:

You will be talented engineer with a track record of programming in aleast one of Java, C++ or C#. You will be passionate about writing code but understand that there is more to being a professional Software Engineer than writing code. You will also be a proactive problem solver who is willing to learn and has testing, issue tracking, documentation and configuration management in their DNA. You will be someone who can actively contribute to continuous improvement and communicate complex technical issues well, even if it isn't your first instinct. Working positively within a team and delivering high quality service and support to users and engineering customers is also a desirable attribute.
