The Consumers and Markets Directorate covers some of the hottest topics in industry, government and the media. Our work covers questions such as: are energy bills too high? How can we get more consumers interested in switching supplier? And how can consumers be protected in this fast-changing environment? To support this, we are recruiting a team to lead our work on retail market stability - one of the most important issues facing the energy market today. The competitive dynamic of the market has never been stronger but new entrants bring risk and in recent years some suppliers have failed. It is important work that will helps us to ensure that the regulatory landscape is fit for purpose and consumers are adequately protected.

Educated to degree level, or with equivalent professional experience, you will be financially literate with a strong understanding of how markets work. Highly developed analytical skills are vital, as you will be making recommendations based on evidenced conclusions drawn from data, financial reports and metrics. Experience in analysing policy issues, particularly in relation to competition and consumers, is also required and you must have a demonstrable track record in producing high-quality policy papers that can inform internal and external debate. In a fast-moving sector, the ability to deliver accurately at pace is essential; we will be looking for first-rate project management and delivery capabilities, plus the flexibility and interpersonal skills to be able to work effectively within and across teams. An understanding of the commercial and regulatory frameworks governing the operation of electricity and gas markets would be advantageous.
