DRIVE CHANGE WITHIN A WORLD-CLASS DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT

Why us, why now?

This is an unprecedented time for digital, data and technology in the UK government. Countries like the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are modelling their digital transformation on ours. Why? Because we're putting user needs at the heart of digital development to make government work better for everyone. We're 17,000 colleagues across government, and we're scaling up nationwide. Our new cloud model is giving us unparalleled agility and bravery to ensure government is equipped and inspired to deliver real, meaningful change. The potential to shape our society's future is enormous - and we want you to be part of it.

About the role

As our Lead Network Engineer, you'll understand our current and future business needs, and you'll determine how these can be best supported by our IT infrastructure. Identifying and promoting ideas for improvement, you'll maintain a general awareness of developments in the IT network and infrastructure marketplace, and you'll report on their potential impact. You'll develop the strategic and tactical engineering roadmaps for technologies and services. By ensuring they're future-proofed, you'll achieve maximum value from our investment. You'll own the operational relationships with suppliers, which is about making sure that services and products are delivered and aligned to industry best practice, regulatory and contractual requirements. You'll verify technical solutions against previously approved architecture specifications and change requests. Plus, you'll monitor network and system logs to ensure successful processing, providing continuous improvement to achieve a 100% uptime SLA.

What we're looking for

You're a senior engineer with executive technical and communications skills. You're customer-oriented with excellent problem-solving skills, and hands-on experience of operating and maintaining WANs, LANs and Wireless Networks. As well as carrier-based experience in designing and implementing enterprise level networks, you have an expert knowledge of BGP routing, QOS and other WAN based technologies. You're also familiar with cloud-based information security products, Internet security, web security, firewalls, sandboxing, and SSL inspection. What's more, you're familiar with network monitoring tools such as SolarWinds (or similar), and you bring experience of NAC, IDS and IPS technologies.

Help shape a truly digital government

If you're excited by an ever-evolving technological landscape and a fast-moving digital change agenda, this is a fantastic opportunity to apply your skills to do what matters. Here, you'll be helping us respond to the changing needs and expectations of millions of people, delivering services that are simpler, faster and easier to use. And in return, you'll enjoy the fantastic range of benefits the Civil Service has to offer.
