DESIGN A WORLD-CLASS DIGITAL FUTURE

Why us, why now?

This is an unprecedented time for digital, data and technology in the UK government. Countries like the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are modelling their digital transformation on ours. Why? Because we're putting user needs at the heart of digital development to make government work better for everyone. We're 17,000 colleagues across government, and we're scaling up nationwide. Our new cloud model is giving us unparalleled agility and bravery to ensure government is equipped and inspired to deliver real, meaningful change. The potential to shape our society's future is enormous - and we want you to be part of it.

About the role

As our Senior Service Designer, you will lead and define user journeys by getting to know user needs and interactions within BEIS and across government. Articulating the vision for products and services, you'll identify opportunities for cost reduction and improvement. Collaborating on designs with developers and other multidisciplinary colleagues, you'll engage the whole multidisciplinary team with the design process. As well as training and mentoring other service designers, you'll explain design decisions and represent the service at a service assessment. Understanding existing supporting systems, you'll design targeted improvements to accommodate change. You'll create and rapidly iterate service prototypes, identifying and designing new service patterns and standards.

What we're looking for

You welcome constructive criticism, as well as constructively reviewing the work of others. You're familiar with service design deliverables and service blueprints, and you're proactive about planning ahead. You're great at identifying key issues and ensuring they get the attention they deserve, at the earliest opportunity. You work well under pressure and to tight deadlines. You're also quick to make good decisions, effectively problem solving and prioritising what's important. In short, you're a self-starter. You're willing to learn and not afraid to fail. You know about GOV.UK and the Government Digital Service, and the service standard. You're a team player, ready to pick up varied tasks to make sure we deliver.

Help shape a truly digital government

If you're excited by an ever-evolving technological landscape and a fast-moving digital change agenda, this is a fantastic opportunity to apply your skills to do what matters. Here, you'll be helping us respond to the changing needs and expectations of millions of people, delivering services that are simpler, faster and easier to use. And in return, you'll enjoy the fantastic range of benefits the Civil Service has to offer.
