Location: Reading or HavantSalary: up to £62000 depending on skills and experience + annual bonusFull Time Hours with flexible working patterns available Our Role This is an opportunity for an experienced and talented Data Scientist to join our expanding team in this hands-on Data Science role, working closely with the SSE businesses on some of the most demanding, high-profile data science problems in energy. Youll build innovative proof of concepts for complex industrial problems across our key business units, including: Generation (Hydro, Offshore wind, Onshore wind, Gas, Coal): Transmission; Distribution (including Smart Grid), Trading, B2B supply, Enterprise (including Smart cities, Telco, Rail).As part of the wider Data and Analytics (DnA) team, we work in small agile teams, applying state-of-the-art techniques from data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence and decision optimization to discover value from data for our businesses as well as building advanced data visualizations. We carry out short term initiatives using a light-weight agile process.Were building an advanced cloud analytics platform and use a variety of data sources ranging from IOT sensor data, geospatial, weather, lidar, fault and maintenance, to telematics and use advanced supporting technologies including GIS systems and PAAS machine learning services. Our future strategy is to provide scalability through trusted DnA partners, and to support federated data science capability within the business units themselves.Your Skills and ExperienceWe need you to have a passion for Data Science and AI combined with the ability to communicate insights to the business and senior executives to help build winning business strategies. Youll already be applying data science / machine learning / AI to solve business problems, ideally within the energy or engineering sector, and this will be based on a Degree in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or a related quantitative discipline, plus a MSc or PhD in a related subject such as Data Science or Artificial Intelligence, or equivalent knowledge developed through training or professional experience.Evidence of continued development through online courses, meetups or equivalent is also highly desirable.Technically, youll bring very strong experience in the majority of the following: Machine learning (Supervised, Unsupervised, scikit-learn); Deep Learning (Tensorflow/Keras); Python (Pandas, Numpy, PySpark, Jupyter); Git; Tableau or equivalent; SQL; Artificial Intelligence/cognitive services.It would be an advantage if you also have knowledge and experience of: Automated descriptive analytics; Geospatial data science / visualization; Azure or similar cloud; Azure ML Services or similar PAAS ML; Anomaly detection; GIS; Diagnostics; NoSQL; Graph database; decision augmentation/automation e.g. Heuristic Optimization/ Reinforcement Learning; optimization/planning/scheduling; Apache Spark.Intellectually curious, youll also demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to present complex ideas to technical and non-technical audiences at all levels.
