The UK Atomic Energy Authority, UKAEA, is growing, seeking to position the UK as a world-leader in fusion power plant design by building on its strengths which have been substantially enhanced in recent years - operating JET, robotics at RACE, materials science at the Materials Research Facility, tokamak science (MAST-U, JET and internationally), tritium science at H3AT, new Fusion Technology Facilities and advanced computing.

A key challenge in power plant design is the need to integrate many different systems. As we explore ways to accelerate the realisation of societal and economic benefits of fusion power through the first generation of fusion power plants, we must establish greater integration between physics, technology and engineering. This requires further growth at UKAEA to exploit its new capabilities, creating exciting opportunities to be part of a highly skilled, multi-disciplinary team driving to deliver fusion power.

To meet the UK`s needs, we have a number of opportunities available within our software and computing area.

Computing is at the heart of the research and technology advances we`re pursuing across all our programmes: from controlling existing fusion reactors to simulating future ones, from cutting-edge robotic applications to digital engineering design, from developing and exploiting computing platforms to making fusion data available in new ways to accelerate discoveries.

The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. UKAEA also works with industry and other third parties to develop new technologies currently in Remote Handling and Materials research. Following recent UK funding two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation are being built, as well as the STEP spherical tokamak power plant programme. The culture at UKAEA promotes research, innovation and leading edge technological excellence, whilst investing in its people.
