We are looking for a Python guru interested to apply excellent coding skills to a range of satellite remote sensing challenges. You should be able to use Python to an excellent standard resulting in clear, concise, and well-constructed code that is efficient, elegant and robust.

The PML Earth Observation Science group is responsible for research and development of satellite Earth Observation products resulting in scientific publications and applications that can be commercialised by our Centre for Geospatial Applications. We provide data to arguably the largest and most ambitious Earth observation and climate change programmes currently underway:  the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS), the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), Copernicus Land Monitoring Service and the ESA Climate Change Initiative.

It would be an advantage but not essential to have a  background in Earth observation, satellite algorithm development or environmental science: primarily we need an experienced programmer capable of understanding complex issues, designing an effective solution, and delivering streamlined, well documented code in a team consisting of researchers and  developers with strong programming expertise. As a python guru you will be able to advise others on best practise and efficient solutions.

The EO group resources include an in-house grid computing infrastructure of approximately 1,400 CPUs and 7TB RAM; more than 8.5PB of storage (and growing regularly); a cutting-edge GPU cluster boasting 1.3Tb graphics processing memory and 230,000 compute cores optimised for deep learning; a 2Gbps internet connection.

You should be able to demonstrate your Python programming prowess: this may take the form of an industry-recognised qualification, an undergraduate degree, or a post-graduate qualification, although these are not mandatory. It may be that you have chosen your own path to guru status and you can demonstrate your knowledge and experience in other ways.

The post is based in our office in Plymouth and offered with an open ended contract at Technologist level, with a salary up to £37,281. In addition, you will have a generous 30 days of annual leave plus 8 days of public holiday. The position advertised is a full-time role at 37 hours per week. We also operate a flexible working policy.

Interviews will be held on 25th & 26th July 2019
