Senior Business Intelligence Engineer

Buckfastleigh, Devon

Circa £50,000 per annum DOE

About Our Client

As the UK's largest independent producer of organic veg boxes, you can imagine that our client is no ordinary e-commerce company. They deliver to more than 50,000 households every week, and run 3 farms, 2 pack houses, a butchery, a vegetable wholesaler and a restaurant! Every part of their company is enabled through technology, from the PDAs out on the fields, to their website and mobile apps. They are extraordinarily passionate about their products, the ethics they demand of themselves in their supply, and the attention to detail they take in their delivery.

Our client's high expectations are rewarded by getting to be part of a fantastic business with amazing benefits. They are based in some of the most beautiful countryside in the world, in a modern solar-powered office with all the best start-up trimmings: good coffee, organic home-cooked breakfasts and lunches, top-end hardware and obviously an arcade machine. They are employee owned, and all co-owners share their profits, because they believe everyone should succeed together. When was the last time you heard birdsong while working? Walked down a path and saw the wildlife while having a go/no go meeting? Ate poached egg on toast during a review session? Chatted with a stakeholder over an organic beer? This is life with our client.

What our client expects of a Senior Business Intelligence Engineer

They're opening a new chapter of business intelligence - and they need you, a technical authority in the engineering of business intelligence systems, to help deliver the roadmap. You'll work with the wider IT team and every department of the business: capturing, architecting and delivering analysis of data that will allow them to improve their products and customer experiences. It will be your responsibility to deliver a best-of-breed business intelligence function, both white-glove and self-service, helping our client make strategic decisions through robust data and insight.

Working with business stakeholders will be second nature to you, along with identifying, questioning, then aligning with business information requests. You will be a strong communicator, able to clearly and confidently outline decisions, approaches and conclusions that are key to wider business success. You'll be exceptionally data-driven, wanting to experiment to ratify and optimise results and identify new opportunities. Most of all, you will want to work with like-minded and highly capable people to deliver fantastic flavoursome and ethical food, steered by your team's insight.

What you should know

Our client is less concerned about specifics and decades of experience than they are about capability, ambition and cultural fit. If there's something on their list which is out of your comfort zone, that's fine - but expect them to expect you to pick it up and run with it should you join them! That said, here are our client's ideal skills for this role:

- SSIS / SSRS / SSAS - MSSQL stack for BI

- PowerBI - Delivering powerful self-service BI

- Data architecture - From inception to delivery ensuring data provenance

- Data management - Definition of appropriate policies for data lifecycle

- ETL - Extracting, transforming and consolidating data, company-wide

- Analytics - Discovery and interpretation of patterns within data

- Modelling - Conceptual, logical and physical data models and prediction

- Analysis - Results should answer questions not simply expose data

- Presentation - Delivering insight clearly and confidently up to the Board

- Consulting - BI as a two-way strategic service to business stakeholders

- ML & AI - They want to leverage AI where useful

- Python - For deeper statistical analysis of complex situations

- SQL - Deep understanding and application of advanced querying

- Best practice - Query reviews, result testing, data fuzzing and proofs

- Agile / Scrum / Kanban - Work just-in-time to release value quickly

Your experience

- Either a solid degree in a STEM subject, or similar capability through experience

- Very capable of analysing complex scenarios and large amounts of data, and communicating conclusions to both technical and non-technical people concisely

- Likely to have more than 5 years' experience in business intelligence, analytics or quantitative analysis around commerce, forecasting etc.

- Probably involved in the wider business intelligence ecosystem through blogs, talks and conferences

- Previous work with large-scale e-commerce systems and medium- to large-scale integrated organisations, delivering insight and intelligence

- History of identifying opportunity for data capture and analysis, then executing those opportunities to deliver real business

What you get

Our client rewards their staff over and above the norm. They offer a working environment unlike any other and they are constantly improving. That said, here are the usual suspects:

- Matched contributory pension

- 33 days' holiday including Bank Holidays

- 25% off all their stunning ethical organic food and local partners

- Heavily subsidised, home-cooked organic breakfast and lunch

- 10% of their gross profits are shared with the staff

- Free grade-out organic fruit and veg

- Amazing organic coffee selections; morning espresso to stay-late cafetières

- BIG summer and winter parties, along with all year BBQs and get-togethers

- Multiple screens, a top-end computer (16GB, SSD), and any software you need
