Team overview

Our client's duties and responsibilities are heavily influenced by European and international policy and legislative developments, as well as technological and commercial developments in the sectors they regulate, all of which determine and inform what they do and how they do it. Moreover, our client's ability to secure outcomes for consumers increasingly requires that they co-ordinate with other countries and influence different actors internationally. In some areas they represent the UK internationally, under a direction from Government. The organisation therefore dedicates significant resources to international engagement. 

Purpose of the Role

This role will focus particularly on the expanding area of internet and technology policy, with specific work areas including but not limited to online harms, net neutrality and cyber security. It will include cultivating relationships with regulatory counterparts in other countries, and relevant international bodies and stakeholders, with the aim of understanding and influencing policy developments internationally. It will also involve working within the organisation to explain international developments to relevant policy teams and to ensure that the international perspective is reflected in the organisation's work.

Requirements of the Role

- Develop and maintain relationships with regulators and other stakeholders internationally, to understand policy developments in other countries;
- Help develop a strategic programme of work for our client's engagement in international bodies and fora, around internet and technology policy issues;

- Take responsibility for delivery of specific elements within this programme of work. Examples might include:
- working alongside the Technology Team to track and contribute to the development of international approaches to cyber security and network resilience;
- proactively convening ad-hoc networks or conference panels to discuss convergent approaches to elements of online regulation;
- deploying and preparing senior colleagues strategically on international visits in support of our client's policy objectives; or
- preparing international engagement plans around emerging technologies and evolving policy issues in the tech and internet space

- Be a point person broadly for our client's international work on internet and technology policy, able to engage with internal colleagues and international stakeholders as required, and represent the organisation externally;
- Work flexibly within the International Team on a range of other policy issues, as required.
- This role will involve travel within and outside continental Europe.

Skills, knowledge and experience

Our client is looking for a proactive and enthusiastic individual with a can-do attitude who will thrive working as part of a diverse team and in a fast-paced environment. In particular, you will:

- Have demonstrated experience in handling a variety of stakeholders in different environments;
- Have strong interpersonal and diplomatic skills, including cultural awareness, so that you can establish and maintain good working relationships internally and externally, particularly with regulators and stakeholders in other countries.
- Be alert and sensitive to the strategic implications of international political and policy developments;
- Have some knowledge of internet and technology policy issues, and the ability to master new policy areas quickly;
- Have strong and demonstrated analytical skills: able to cut through complex issues to see and communicate the bigger picture, and be comfortable with data and quantitative analysis;
- Have the ability to understand the political dimension to policy issues, and to make judgments balancing policy and political considerations, in a pragmatic manner, to achieve strategic objectives;
- Be capable of quickly gaining an understanding of a range of new policy issues, including technical ones;
- Be able to manage a varied and demanding workload and to prioritise your time effectively in an agile manner and according to strategic importance;
- Have strong project management skills, including the ability to manage a varied and demanding workload and to prioritise resources effectively in an agile manner;
- Be flexible and adaptable to changing or ambiguous circumstances;
- Have a demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, concisely and confidently to a variety of audiences, both orally and in written form;
- Be capable of working independently, seeking guidance whenever it is needed, as well as able to work collaboratively within a team.
