Resident Assistant Instructor Intern - Student Industrial Placement - 12 months

Salary: £6,600 per annum plus free accommodation (Remuneration Package £16,150.00)

Hours: Full time (Mon - Fri)

We are currently wanting eight interns who would be interested in working as a Resident Assistant Instructor available for 1 year, starting 29 July 2019 with Westminster City Councils highly respected outdoor learning centre, Sayers Croft in Surrey. The centre is a beautiful 60 acre site consisting of woodlands, ponds and fields nestled in the Surrey Hills. They have been providing quality outdoor experiences to young people from London and the South East for over 75 years. As part of their enthusiastic education team, you will continue this tradition.

This position will suit an undergraduate who is interested in starting a career in outdoor learning. Over the year youll have the opportunity to work on a project in your specialist area, and they will put you through a programme of training to develop skills to plan and lead visiting groups. Additionally, they will provide training in REC level 2 first aid, STA pool responder, Duke of Edinburgh assessor plus in house activity training including high ropes, wall climbing, archery and environmental studies to name a few.

Throughout the year youll be paired with one of our experienced Instructors that will mentor you in developing your teaching skills and technical knowledge, providing one to one support. On a rotation youll spend time with our ranger maintaining and caring for our fantastic grounds, its a great opportunity to build grounds maintenance skills such as hand tool use and mini tractor driving.

In addition to circa £550 per month living allowance, they will include private room accommodation in our shared staff blocks. Accommodation is of a high standard and based away from the visitor section of the centre and includes shared kitchen, living room, laundry and garden facilities.

What you will be doing

Leading and developing sessions

o Leading sessions on a variety of topics in environmental education, adventure and challenge activities for day visits or residential groups

o Working alongside Instructors to deliver specialist sessions

o Taking responsibility for an area of the Centres education equipment

Grounds Maintenance

o Undertaking practical conservation and grounds management tasks

o Supporting the work of the Grounds department staff

o Use of basic conservation tools and equipment

Evening Duty

o Leading evening activities and session support

o Responding to the needs of groups in residence

o Providing duty cover over one - two nights a week between 5pm and 10.30 pm (a Senior residential member of staff will always be available in the event of emergencies)

Health and Safety

o As requested by management, assist undertake risk assessments and update safety documentation and procedures of designated areas.

o Identify potential safety risks to staff and visitors of the centre and work with management to reduce/eliminate these risks.

Qualifications, experiences, knowledge and skills will be assessed through your application and the interview process.

Education/Qualification:

o Open to undergraduates looking for a years placement

Essential:

o Experience working with children

o Experiences of adventurous activities

o Experience of conservation work

o Empathy for the aims and ethos of Sayers Croft

o Ability to work as part of a team

o Ability to enthuse and motivate people

o Able to communicate effectively with children & adults

o Able to live in shared accommodation with colleagues

o Willingness to work flexibly including evenings and weekends

o A full CRB clearance (provided on successful offer)

Desirable:

o High levels of safety awareness

o Able to dynamically risk assess situations

o Good IT skills MS word, Excel & PowerPoint

o First Aid (training provided if needed)

o Full clean driving licence

A candidate who does not have the complete range of qualifications listed above will be considered if they can demonstrate that they are actively working towards them, especially if they have in-house qualifications from another Centre
