Senior Software Developer with front-end web development experience (HTML / CSS / JavaScript) and back-end experience with database systems (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB etc.) is required by a well-established Organisation.

 

SALARY: £50,000 - £60,000 pro rata dependent on experience (including London weighting) + Generous Benefits

LOCATION: London, Birmingham, Cardiff or Belfast - candidates can be based at any of these offices and also have the option to work remotely anywhere within the UK

JOB TYPE: Permanent, Full-Time or Part-Time

WORKING HOURS: 37 Hours per Week or 29.6 Hours per Week (i.e. 4 or 5 day working week)

FIRST STAGE: The selection process will involve a short coding test prior to interview selection, a test that is scored blind. The test will be sent to candidates with completed tests to be submitted within 7 days. The tests will then be reviewed within 2 business days and the top scoring candidates will be sent invitations to interview. Interviews will take place in Birmingham, although Skype will be considered for candidates for whom travelling poses a problem.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Organisation is seeking an experienced Senior Software Developer with front-end web development experience (HTML / CSS / JavaScript) and back-end experience with database systems (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB etc.)

Working as the Senior Software Developer your role will involve building and improving user-centred digital services for the Organisation. Their current focus is to replace the existing range of many different programmes with three core funding products, encompassing initial application right through assessment, award, and subsequent grant management.

As the Senior Software Developer, you will be situated within a multidisciplinary service design team. Their mix of skills and ways of working have been substantially shaped by the Government Digital Service's Service Manual and Digital Service Standard, and by modern digital working practices.

The Organisation work in short sprints and regularly share, reflect on, and iterate on their work, with regular opportunities to observe usability testing sessions. You will work closely with the team's existing Senior Developers, and in multidisciplinary product teams, collaborating with designers, product owners, and other internal and external stakeholders. The Organisation encourage collaboration via code review, pairing, showing work in progress via regular show-and-tells, and getting and giving regular feedback.

 

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

You will be a capable Software Developer with strong experience across both front-end and back-end development (The Organisation understand that you will have areas of specialism). You will have a track record of delivering customer-facing digital services that placed user experience and user needs at their heart, either as a solo coder or as part of a team.

You'll need experience in:

Building server-side web applications. They mostly use Node.js along with some PHP. They are happy to consider applicants with experience in other equivalent programming languages

Front-end web development using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with a focus on progressive enhancement, performance, and accessibility

Designing and building strong test suites

Developing on cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure

Contributing to securing digital systems

Database systems such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB

Modern version control systems. We use git alongside GitHub

Translating technical concepts for a non-technical audience, and working well with non-technical peers
