The UNIX administrator is responsible for the day to day management of the UNIX estate to include related incidents and projects. The successful candidate will be the technical focal for both team members and the business when it comes to UNIX related requirements.
This includes monitoring incident queues and project requests to ensure we are improving the quality and adherence to contractual SLA and KPI requirements of the programme within Boeing Defence UK (BDUK).
This is a hands-on role whereby the successful candidate will need to be highly skilled in multiple UNIX disciplines with an appreciation of other related Infrastructure disciplines including networking (TCP/IP), virtualisation and storage (SAN/NAS/NFS).
Boeing Defence UK is responsible for delivering IT services to a number of customers both internal and external throughout the UK. The Unix Administrator is part of the Infrastructure Team working closely alongside other technical teams, service management and programme functions.
This role will report to the Infrastructure Manager with responsibilities for:
Performing daily administrative tasks
Supporting the UNIX team Leader and Manager
Provide technical leadership in the design, development and integration of UNIX requirements.
Identify areas of improvement
Lead a drive towards automation
Document UNIX standards to be followed by the organisation
Work closely with other teams across the business to improve efficiency of infrastructure such as service management
Fault diagnosis including problem statements and mitigation planning.
Review of Architect HLD's and contributions to Infrastructure LLD's
The successful candidate will be expected to be part of a 24x7 on-call team and provide extended hours support via a team rota.
Demonstrable experience in a UNIX role (RedHat or UNIX) either delivery or support
Good UNIX/Linux systems administration skills, including configuration, troubleshooting and scripting
Troubleshooting and performance tuning experience
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
Service Management Tools
Working within an ITIL framework
Experience in securing and subsequent restoration of services in a contingency or DR scenario
Experience of working within a secure environment
Experience of containerisation such as Docker
Experience of automation techniques
Service Desk tool BTO
