The Senior Network Engineer Role:

You will be part of a team of technical experts managing our National and International Networks and be responsible for assisting with the technical delivery of all iomart managed hosting customers and network services.

Senior Network Engineer Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

+ Manage systems 100% uptime for the network infrastructure
+ Work closely with the Group Network Manager to ensure that we maintain 100% uptime for our customers
+ Act as a subject matter expert within the group for network related queries including but not limited to technical design, best practices and deployment methodologies
+ Liaise with internal/external customers to understand technical requirements and resolve issues as quickly as possible and with minimum customer impact
+ Provide on-call support for essential services/critical incidents as part of a rota.
+ Provision new services for customers (HSRP links, Switch configurations, Firewall Deployments and Upgrades)
+ Investigate and Diagnose network related incidents reported by customers, and liaise with Upstream Providers/Peers if necessary
+ Analyse and Upgrade network resources where required. This includes router upgrades, uplink upgrades, chassis replacements, provisioning new point of presence locations
+ Merge other networks into the Iomart network - migrate BGP cores into Iomart's AS number, migrate customer services into the network with no/minimal downtime
+ Deploy multi-site customers using AToM circuits and L3 MPLS VPNs and assist customers during complex migrations
+ Deploy and maintain BGP sessions on public peering LANs, as well as analyse traffic patterns to identify potential peers that could targeted via LINX or as a candidate for Private Network Interconnect (PNI)
+ Manage the upstream traffic commit to make sure the bandwidth overage charges are minimised

Senior Network Engineer Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Essential:


+ Must have UK Government SC Clearance or be eligible to apply for same (5 years UK residence typically required for this)
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
+ Cisco Certified Network Professional or equivalent experience
+ Strong technical background: Routing Protocols (BGP, OSPF), Switching Technologies (STP, Dot1Q, QinQ, EtherChannel) and IPv6
+ Strong understanding of the technologies and challenges in data centre environments (Broadcast Domains, VLAN's, HSRP, VRRP)
+ Strong understanding of security appliances (Juniper SRX, Cisco ASA and Firepower)
+ Thorough understanding of Server Operating Systems (Debian, CentOS, Windows Server)
+ Experience of network design in large data centres
+ Thorough planning and strong understanding of change management processes
+ Experience of managing infrastructure/technical services in a hosted environment

Desirable:

+ Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert or equivalent experience
+ Robust understanding of Cisco Core Networking (7600, 6500, 4500, ASR 1K, ASR 9K)
+ Experience with Arista, Juniper, Dell, Force10
+ Strong understanding of MPLS Technologies (L3VPN, AToM, VPLS)
+ Excellent understanding of network overlay technologies such as Cisco ACI/VXLAN and experience in deployment and ongoing management.
+ Network Automation/Programming using Python and/or other scripting languages.
