Resilience Coxswain Mechanic - Isle of Man

Covering the Isle of Man

From £30,671 per annum Plus Excellent Benefits

Our client is the charity that saves lives at sea. They have an exciting opportunity on the Isle of Man as a Resilience Coxswain Mechanic for a candidate whose management and leadership skills are just as strong as their ability to handle a boat in adverse sea conditions.

In order to improve support and resilience at lifeboat stations, this position, whilst centred in a single location, will provide Coxswain Mechanic cover across the Isle of Man. If you pride yourself on your management capabilities, strength of character and personality, impressive boat-handling skills and are adept at maintaining and repairing high speed diesels, this could be the role for you.

The majority of your time will be spent providing cover at lifeboat stations, ensuring lifeboats remain on operational service on the Isle of Man. Responsibilities include:

- Ensuring the lifeboat and equipment work to the highest order

- Training crew and taking them on seagoing exercises

- Identifying ways that crews can improve, imparting your valuable knowledge so that when an emergency shout does occur, the lifeboat and crew, working with you, are fully prepared to respond

- Engaging with the public and talking about your work

- Participating in proactive education and safety programmes, working with partners and external organisations

Overall, you will contribute to the operational management of the stations you cover and provide regular assurance on compliance and station activities to the Operations Group, and area management teams.

To be considered, you will need:

- Extensive maritime experience and the ability to command and lead a crew and safely operate/handle vessels up to 20 metres in length

- Experience of maintaining and operating high speed marine diesel engines and their ancillary systems

- Knowledge of SAR operations

- Operational leadership skills

- An RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Power) qualification or equivalent

- A marine and/or mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent to NVQ level 3 standard

Ideally, you'll have an RNLI COBT for ALB Coxswain and Command of the lifeboat operational pass out / RNLI COBT for ALB Mechanic and Command of machinery operational pass out, but this isn't essential. A basic level of IT literacy would also be beneficial.

As this is a seagoing appointment, you will be required to be on call 24 hours per day, weekdays and weekends. Weekend and annual leave will need to be pre-planned and flexible. In order to meet callout response criteria, this appointment is subject to satisfying medical and eyesight requirements, and has associated conditions of service.

As this is a sea-going appointment, you will need to satisfy the institution's medical and eyesight standards.

Our client is committed to safeguarding; ensuring the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk. They expect all employees and volunteers to share this commitment.

The closing date for applications is the 17th March 2019, with interviews scheduled to be held on the week commencing the 1st April 2019.

The suitability of all prospective employees and volunteers will be assessed during the recruitment process in line with this commitment. This will include relevant criminal record checks being carried out dependent on the eligibility of the role. (England & Wales; DBS check, Scotland; Disclosure Scotland PVG, Northern Ireland; Access NI, Republic of Ireland; Garda Vetting).

Our client's staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. They respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within their teams, and consider it essential to help them deliver a world-class lifesaving service. They are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, they also look for applicants who share their commitment to living their values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping them work towards their goals of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
