Design the future of our digital service

About us

The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has a vision to build an economy that works for everyone, so that there are great places in every part of the UK for people to work and for businesses to invest, innovate and grow.

There has never been a more exciting time to work in BEIS - especially within Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT). We have only just begun to consider how we might exploit the options presented by the latest technology. This is an exceptional opportunity for you to play your part in guiding the Department into a new digital future.

The role

As a senior member of the team, you’ll design and lead on the end-to-end journey of our IT provision. Working with a variety of project teams, our delivery partners and Service Managers, you’ll redefine and improve the way in which users access our services, and champion a human-centred approach to design.

Your key responsibilities will include:

-Analysing service delivery levels that fall below standards and identifying causes

-Identifying opportunities for improvements and cost reduction

-Advising and leading technical specialists on the development of delivery and service provision

-Project managing and leading on the design, delivery and development of new and existing services and provisions

-Liaising with and managing expectations of a range of stakeholders

-Creating and rapidly iterating service prototypes

-Identifying and designing new cross government service patterns and standards

About you

You’ll need to be an excellent communicator, who can listen to the needs of technical and business stakeholders and interpret between them. You’ll need to manage each stakeholder’s expectations, which occasionally means facilitating difficult decisions.

As a service designer, you’re responsive to digital change and you adapt your perspective accordingly. You facilitate decisions and risk, generate (and test) multiple solutions to problems, and while you can write your own HTML, you understand the importance of prototyping and testing as a team.

It’s vital that you can think strategically, remain user-focused and understand - and work within - identified constraints.

Benefits

As a Civil Service employee, you’ll be entitled to a large range of benefits, including:

-Regular performance and development reviews

-25 days of annual leave on entry, increasing to 30 days after 5 years

-One further day paid privilege entitlement to mark the Queen’s Birthday

-Flexible working patterns including part- time or time-term working

-Generous paid maternity and paternity leave

-Interest-free season ticket and bicycle loans

-Competitive contributory pension scheme
