Design and develop our digital future

About us

The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has a vision to build an economy that works for everyone, so that there are great places in every part of the UK for people to work and for businesses to invest, innovate and grow.

There has never been a more exciting time to work in BEIS - especially within Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT). We have only just begun to consider how we might exploit the options presented by the latest technology. This is an exceptional opportunity for you to play your part in guiding the Department into a new digital future.

The role

As Web Developer, you’ll play a major role in the Department’s move to a cloud-based system. It’s you who will create the reliable, high-performing applications and services used by our diverse range of staff and stakeholders. Your main responsibilities will include:

-Planning and prototyping new applications

-Architecture design for application components

-Supporting technology- and language-choice decisions for projects

-Bug fixing and testing sites and applications in various browsers and environments

-Solving a range of problems, including those escalated from Tech Bar

-Testing new features thoroughly

-Reviewing colleagues’ code

-Building and testing APIs for applications to exchange data

-Documenting code so colleagues can understand and contribute to it

About you

You’re confident writing in one or more programming or scripting languages, such as PHP or JavaScript, and you’re keen to keep up-to-date with new technology, languages and frameworks. It’s likely you do this by attending web development conferences and workshops - and you probably speak at these events, too.

We’ll look to you to translate business problems into technical designs for our technology and business stakeholders, so you’ll need to be comfortable with, and enjoy, exploring different approaches to problem solving.

We need someone who creates meaningful interactions with our diverse range of users. That’s why it’s important that you put them first, and can use evidence to identify who they are and what their needs might be.

Benefits

As a Civil Service employee, you’ll be entitled to a large range of benefits, including:

-Regular performance and development reviews

-25 days of annual leave on entry, increasing to 30 days after 5 years

-One further day paid privilege entitlement to mark the Queen’s Birthday

-Flexible working patterns including part- time or time-term working

-Generous paid maternity and paternity leave

-Interest-free season ticket and bicycle loans

-Competitive contributory pension scheme
