Role: Principal Systems Engineer - Solutions Architect x3

Location: Malvern/London/Farnborugh

Contract: Until 31st March (to be extended in new tax year)

Daily Rate: £500 - £600

Security Clearance needed: SC/DV Minimum

Role Description:

Individuals work with customers, business development and bid teams to develop requirements, solution concepts, and technical proposals and estimates. This entails working in the problem and solution spaces, considering the feasibility of addressing the problem, and achieving a balance between problem and solution considerations.

Addresses enterprise and lifecycle considerations, and devises and coordinates a suitable engineering solution integrating systems engineering and other technical and management (e.g. project management) disciplines. Employs approaches including planning, multi-disciplinary systems engineering, concurrent engineering, the integration of engineering specialisms (e.g. safety), and 'soft skills' (such as team building), to ensure that safe, effective and efficient processes are applied.

Key Capabilities/Knowledge:

1. Leadership of technical bid teams throughout the concept generation phase, requiring delivery of complex solutions to a range of demanding customers

2. Good problem-solving ability through the application of conceptual, creative and innovative thinking to devise suitable and/or novel solutions

3. A solid understanding of the systems engineering lifecycle and its implementation

4. Understands the operational environment and underlying domain specific issues

5. Understand possible problems and has ideas for overcoming barriers

6. Understanding of different systems engineering methods, their applicability, and effect

7. Able to understand the contribution of, and engage with, other relevant technical disciplines to devise holistic solutions

8. Understanding of business/enterprise impact and dependencies of work

9. Understanding of technical implications of proposed solution including on other processes

10. Able to ensure that customer needs and expectations are addressed and/or satisfied

11. Able to identify, conceive, review, and judge the suitability of systems solutions

12. Able to manage multidisciplinary teams of engineers and scientists and a broad range of internal and external stakeholders whilst building and maintaining excellent relationships.

13. Good negotiation and presentation skills

14. Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels across the department, business, and externally with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders

15. An understanding of the application of systems engineering to different domains.

Key accountabilities:

1. Working closely with the project manager to plan and deliver (generally through a team) all the pre-bid technical/engineering activities required to meet business winning objectives

2. Devising of solution concepts which capture the problem to be solved and/or essential features (form, structure, characteristics, principles) of the outline solution

3. Responsible for devising the technical solution using sound technical, management and leadership skills such as systems engineering management and project management

4. Co-ordinates the high-level engineering activities as applicable to the opportunity

5. Addresses enterprise and lifecycle considerations

6. Engaging with customers, other stakeholders, suppliers, and other technical disciplines to help develop an appropriate understanding of the problem and to form the bases of viable solutions

7. Internal and external focal point of contact for the opportunity on all technical/engineering aspects and assurance

8. Identifying the technical risks and opportunities on behalf of the bid manager

9. Ensuring that the solution meets appropriate regulatory, legal, safety and other engineering requirements and standards.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. MSc level qualification or equivalent

2. CEng or equivalent

3. 9-13 years plus relevant experience in engineering/systems engineering.

Specific Domain Knowledge:

Has significant and current knowledge of the following areas and is taking active steps to sustain and extend this knowledge:

1. Knowledge of Strategic Communications and/or Public Sector domains

2. Knowledge of solution technologies and applicable processes for Solution Architects

3. Knowledge of general engineering considerations.
