About the Audit Committee

The Audit Committee is appointed by the Board of Trustees to assist the Board in discharging its oversight responsibilities. It does this by providing the key link between the Director-General and the Executive Team, the Board of Trustees and the external auditors. The Committee also scrutinises financial reporting, risk management and internal control issues.

The Committee meets four times a year at appropriate times in the reporting and audit cycle and otherwise as required and is chaired by a member of our Board of Trustees.

You will find further details of the Audit Committee’s role, the qualities and experience required of its members, and the principles underlying governance appointments in the Trust in the accompanying documents. These details are extracted from our Governance Handbook which is available in full on our website.

Our latest annual report and accounts are available on our website.

About you

We are looking for an individual with strong digital and technology expertise to join our Audit Committee. This individual will provide independent, objective and challenging advice to support the Board of Trustees in their responsibilities for risk management, internal controls, audit and associated assurance processes within the Trust, as well as year-end financial statements and the Trust’s annual report.

You will have strong digital expertise including familiarity with systems and technology, and know the right questions to ask of and challenge management in these areas. You will have extensive senior experience of risk management and organisational controls gained at senior level in the audit and/or financial sector. You will have experience of working with large organisations, possibly in a non-executive capacity. Knowledge of the non-for-profit sector, charity accounting and an understanding of the role of an Audit Committee is not essential but would be an advantage.

Please note that anyone who is appointed to this role should be, or have arrangements in hand to become, a member of the National Trust.

Time commitment and expenses

The expected time commitment is approximately 6-7 days per year - this comprises 5 meetings a year and associated preparation with a full induction. The role is voluntary but we will reimburse your expenses.
