Technology sits at the heart of everything we do at MI5, enabling us to disrupt serious threats to UK security. We’re currently looking for software technicians who are just starting out in their careers to join our Engineering department.

The Role

Engineering is the beating heart of MI5, developing and maintaining tools and capabilities that support all aspects of our business. We solve problems that you don’t see elsewhere, in a unique context that comes with a satisfaction nobody else can offer you. We’re looking for engineers with fresh skills to build, maintain and enhance a wide variety of software products. You will play a key role in ensuring that our business can function efficiently and effectively round the clock. This could involve working on a multi-million pound intercept and intelligence processing system or a rapidly written application answering urgent questions for a high priority investigation.

You will join one of our software engineering teams who build new and existing products that keep MI5’s investigations, analysis and corporate functions running. Whilst our work is interesting and can be fast paced, we take the time to ensure that our Software Technicians have the help and support they need to learn and develop. Whichever team you join, your work will have a direct contribution to the success of MI5’s mission as you gain valuable experience and skills along the way.

Through our sponsorship of Software Engineering apprenticeships, we have experience in bringing junior colleagues through the necessary education and training to develop them from Software Technicians into Software Engineers. We will ensure that you too have access to the right opportunities to turn your coding talent into a set of broad engineering skills.

Over your career you will have the opportunity to move between different teams, working with different technologies to solve the variety of challenging problems we face. We’ll also support you to ensure you develop the skills you need for a rewarding career in MI5, through programmes that allow accreditation of your skills and knowledge, such as completion of British Computing Society qualifications. e.g. professional registration as a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer.

Key Responsibilities

Work in an agile product team as an active contributor to develop, test and release new features.

Help to maintain, monitor and support the team’s products.

Have a positive, can-do approach to good practice, enabling delivery of well-engineered, high quality software.

Own your engineering problems, working with your colleagues to propose and agree the best solution and then taking responsibility for its implementation.

Strive for continuous improvement, challenging existing assumptions and promoting innovation.

The Person

It could be that you are at the beginning of your engineering career, looking to expand your knowledge and experience within our software engineering community. You might have recently completed an Apprenticeship programme in Software Engineering or possess other, similar experience. If you are passionate about problem solving and eager to develop further then this could be your opportunity to join an organisation that will fully support you on that journey.

We want passionate problem solvers who have some experience of coding. You will be the sort of person who actively participates in a team that delivers, supports and maintains solutions as well as engages within our engineering community to share your knowledge and learn from others.

You should have some knowledge and experience in one or more of the following languages: Java, JavaScript, Python or C#.

Our software engineers must be proactive, with a desire to seek out and exploit the challenges provided by the ever-changing world of technology. You need to be driven to improve yourself, working with your management and peers to identify opportunities for you to grow and develop both your technical and soft skills.

We particularly welcome applications from women and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates.
